THIS WEEK IN HOUSTON

March 11–15, 2026

Before diving into this week’s picks, I’m pleased to share a new feature in my occasional Why Houston series. Urban planner James T. Rojas, a nationally recognized thinker who examines how Latino cultural traditions and immigrant experiences shape the American urban landscape, visited Houston last week.

As he traveled home, Rojas began reflecting on a personal question: what if his family had stayed in Texas instead of continuing west to Los Angeles after leaving Chihuahua during the Mexican Revolution? His essay, “Rasquache Urbanism in Houston,” explores the city’s improvisational landscape and the cultural connections that shape how we experience place.

Read his essay here.

Now back to this week in Houston. With the rodeo in full swing and spring break underway for many schools, the art calendar is a little quieter. But that just means a chance to slow down and spend more time with a few thoughtful events across the city. Check out the highlights for the week ahead 🎨
