Thinking Ahead: Winter Is the Perfect Time to Plan Your Next Planting

Even though our landscapes are quiet and dormant this time of year, winter is actually one of the best times to start planning your next planting project. With the growing season just a few months away, now is the perfect opportunity to think through what trees you’d like to add, where they’ll thrive, and how they can enhance the beauty and value of your property.

At Autumn Tree Lawn & Landscape, we’re excited to share that we’ve recently added a beautiful selection of trees to our very own nursery, giving our clients access to healthy, well-cared-for specimens that are ready to be planted as soon as the weather allows.

Our new arrivals include a variety of stunning, hardy species ideal for Colorado landscapes:

🌳 Shade & Structural Trees

🌸 Flowering & Ornamental Varieties

Whether you're looking for vivid spring blooms, bold fall color, strong shade trees, or unique ornamental features, we have something for every landscape and aesthetic.

Planning now means you’ll be first in line for early-season planting availability and your new trees will have a full growing season to get established.

If you're thinking about adding new trees to your landscape in 2026, now is the ideal time to request a bid.

SUPPLEMENTAL WATERING

Colorado winters may bring cold temperatures and the occasional snowfall, but don’t be fooled, those light flurries aren’t enough to keep your trees hydrated. Even in dormancy, trees continue to lose moisture, especially evergreens, newly planted trees, and anything exposed to strong winter sun or wind. Without adequate water, roots can dry out, leading to stress, dieback, and poor spring growth.

That’s where supplemental winter watering comes in. Watering on warm days (above 40°F) provides the deep moisture your trees need to stay healthy throughout the season. But let’s be real, not all of us want to bundle up to water our trees. Our sprinkler are already shut off and we don't want to drag a stiff hose across the yard.

That’s why so many homeowners rely on Autumn Tree Lawn & Landscape for winter watering.

Our team uses professional-grade equipment specifically designed for deep root watering, delivering moisture directly into the critical root zone, something a standard hose simply can’t do. We also apply a customized root-hydration mixture formulated to support root health, enhance moisture retention, and help your trees withstand Colorado’s dry winters.

With Autumn Tree, you get:

  • A thorough, consistent deep root watering service
  • A set cost for watering all trees on your property
  • Trained plant health care professionals
  • No mess, no hassle, no freezing fingers

Your trees are one of the most valuable investments on your property. Keeping them healthy through winter is one of the best ways to protect that investment and we’re here to make the process effortless. Stay warm inside and let the professionals handle the cold. We’ll ensure your trees stay hydrated, healthy, and ready for a strong spring.

If you’d like to schedule winter watering and we've been to your property before, chances are we already have a supplemental watering cost for your property in your account. Call or email us for more information.

A Small Pest With Big Impact

As we move through December and settle into Colorado’s dry winter season, it’s a crucial time to start thinking about one of the most destructive (yet preventable) turf pests in our region: winter lawn mites. These tiny insects, including common species like clover mites and bank grass mites, thrive in the exact conditions our winters create: sunny, dry, south- and west-facing lawns, areas near rock beds, and spots beneath evergreens where the ground retains warmth.

Mites stay active from November through March, feeding on grass blades and roots at a time when your lawn is dormant and unable to defend itself. Because the turf isn’t actively growing, the damage stays hidden until early spring—when brown, patchy areas fail to green up. By the time you see the problem, it often means the grass has already died and may require overseeding or even full sod replacement.

The good news? This damage is highly preventable. At Autumn Tree Lawn & Landscape, we begin our first round of bank mite treatments in January and February, targeting them before populations explode. Preventive applications are the most effective way to protect your lawn and avoid expensive spring repairs. Winter watering also plays a key role mites love dry soil, so regularly watering exposed areas on warm days can significantly reduce their activity.

Even if you haven’t noticed signs of mites, we strongly recommend proactive treatment. It’s affordable, effective, and one of the best steps you can take to ensure a thick, healthy lawn when spring returns.
