Night Out For Safety & Liberation
2021 Community Small Grants Recipient

From BBBC:
“Night Out for Safety and Liberation (NOSL) is an annual event that typically takes place on the first Tuesday of August where we redefine and re-imagine what public safety means for our communities. This event was started by the Ella Baker Center in Oakland, CA as a liberation-focused event to address issues of harm, conflict, and state violence with community-based solutions #We Keep Us Safe
These funds [Community Small Grants] helped us bring together Portlanders at Tabor Commons to reimagine community safety together. We partnered with local organizations, neighbors, and the Umoja Youth to host over 100 individuals to enjoy food, live youth performances, connect with different organizations and local vendors. During NOSL this project provided vaccines, food boxes, STI testing, and collected data on the impacts of propaganda and surveillance in our neighborhoods”
On applying for grants, BBBC advices, “I would suggest applicant groups examine who is not at the table planning with you. Ask yourself “what is a project that creates the most goodness, dignity, and safety in neighborhood”? I would encourage groups to leverage sponsorships and grassroots fundraising to source their projects. Additionally, I would say take lots of pictures!”

Thank you to the Office of Community and Civic Life for funding the Small Grants Program and helping the growth of SE Portland.

Get Engaged
Testify At The Portland Charter Commission
Public Hearings!
We have a once-in-a-decade opportunity to create a more representative democracy and responsive government this November! Now is the time to get involved— give testimony at one of the upcoming Charter Commission hearings!

On March 31, 2022, the Charter Commission preliminarily agreed on a package of reforms to advance to voters. All 20 Charter Commission members supported the package, which would recommend three major changes:
Allowing voters to rank candidates in order of their preference, using ranked choice voting
Four new geographic districts of equal size, with three members elected to represent each district, expanding the city council to a total of 12 members
A city council that focuses on setting policy and a mayor elected citywide to run the city’s day-to-day operations, with the help of a professional city administrator

The Charter Commission wants to hear from you and has scheduled four public hearings in May (online in & in-person) for community members to share their thoughts! Learn more about the Commission’s work, hearing information, and other ways to comment here: bit.ly/Charter-Hearings
