AGASC Members Newsletter

Summer 2023

President's Letter

I hope this letter finds you all in good health and spirits. As we move into the heat of summer, I wanted to share some updates on what's been going on with the Art Glass Association of Southern California.

First and foremost, I want to express what a great group of artists and patrons we have in this association. We have had good participation with our trips, lectures, and workshops. Because of this, we are all the more excited to plan more events for the future.

We have a website that is user-friendly and informative that I hope all of you check out for upcoming events. You can access all our events, classes, and member resources online. We encourage you to explore the site and provide us with any feedback you may have.

Lastly, I hope you look through this newsletter to find out what we have been up to and what is instore for the rest of the year at the AGASC.

As always, please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns. We are here to support you and the art glass community in Southern California.

Best regards,

Jack Wade

President AGASC

AGASC Members Attended the Preston Singletary Talk

At the Mingei International Museum

About twenty members of the AGASC converged at the Mingei Museum on a Saturday in May to hear a talk by the accomplished Preston Singletary (Kagwaantan Tlingit, Killer Whale under Eagle Moiety). He elaborated on thoughts about the evolution of Native glassmaking as well as his art-making process. The discussion centered around techniques he uses to create blown glass sculpture, monumental glass casting and show examples of public art projects.

AGASC Takes a Trip to Coatings by Sandberg

Eighteen members of AGASC and their friends took a trip to Coatings by Sandberg in June. It was the first time for a lot of them. Dana Baldwin gave us a tour and explained how dichroic glass is made and how they make the patterns on the glass. Everyone was very appreciative of the tour and talk, but they were excited when the tour was over and the buying began.

After the buying was over, we ate lunch at Rutabegors, a nearby restaurant. Everyone enjoyed their food, and we were off to Hollander Glass. There we all bought more glass and said our goodbyes.

Hollander Glass had been bought by Bullseye Glass. You will need to update your business license on your Hollander card the next time you go. Remember to take your business license and resale number with you.

Neon Workshops at MONA Museum of Neon Arts

David Svenson and his wife Kasumi taught two workshops for our members at MONA. It was so much fun and an amazing opportunity to learn a new glass technique. It was so popular he did a second workshop. We carpooled up to Glendale to the Museum of Neon Art for this all-day workshop. After the workshop, we were able to tour the museum and see some wonderful vintage and more contemporary neon works. Thanks to David's hard work completing and charging gas into our "gestures" everyone was able to take home a working piece!

If you did not see the great work David had on exhibit at the Clairemont Museum earlier in the year, check out the spring newsletter that covered our group trip in our newsletter archive page on the AGASC.org website.

Beyond Boundaries Glass Exhibit

at the Cannon Gallery in Carlsbad

The newest exhibit at Cannon Art Gallery called Breaking Glass Boundaries, opened on June 24 and runs through Sept. 2. Curated by Barrio Glassworks owner Mary Devlin, Breaking Glass Boundaries captures the magic of glassblowing and sculpture, offering a fusion where complex material is reimagined as swimming sea creatures, teardrops and even dramatic sentries.

The Artist reception on June 24th was very well attended and featured several of our AGASC members. Be sure and stop in to view this show before the closing date of Sept 2nd.

Gallery Hours are:

Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday: Noon – 5 p.m.

Wednesday: noon – 7 p.m.

AGASC “Neu Glas” Show

At Front Porch Gallery

Nineteen artists from the AGASC exhibited works in the Neu Glass Show at Front Porch Gallery from May 21 – July 8, with a reception on May 21. The curated show was beautifully displayed thanks to Front Porch Director, Julie Weaverling. This is what Front Porch had to say about the show, “Neu Glas, merges creative expression and tremendous technique. Multiple displays include prismatic wonders and experimental works of kiln-formed vessels, sculpture, figurative work and abstract creations.” We wish to thank Front Porch Gallery for this opportunity to exhibit our work.

AGASC General Meeting

About 25 members showed up for the general meeting and potluck which was held on July 9, 2023, at Tom Marosz Studio. Before the meeting, Tom held a talk on kiln maintenance and repair that was well-attended. Dennis Wharton made the tastiest smoked corn on the cob for all to enjoy. We would like to thank Norma and Tom for hosting the summer meeting.
