Greetings!
When I started advocating for school choice back in 1989, there wasn't much school choice in the country. Sure, it existed if you could afford it--move to a different neighborhood or pay private school tuition--but today, public policy supports school choice in various ways all across the country--charters, vouchers, tax credits, public school choice, etc. The nation has come a very long way since 1989.
In 2002, four years into our grassroots advocacy work, GEO got to work on providing the last mile of school choice--we started a school of choice. We wanted to show the world who wants choice and that it works.
Twenty-four years later we have mountains of evidence that school choice works. I don't need to look at a research paper or book or another survey. I can look in the eyes of our students and families. It works!
This morning, I took a look at GEO Academies' website and visited our "alumni" page. Check it out. If you are a school choice supporter, and you take a look at our website, get ready to smile and maybe even shed a tear or two. I did both. This page proves your belief in school choice to be right! Truth!
Yes, I know most of these stories because I know most every graduate in our network. And, I keep in touch with them once they graduate. Nonetheless, it was a bit overwhelming to see our alumni page. And this is just a smattering of our alumns. There are a bunch more stories to tell and we will indeed tell them. Each student of ours is extremely important and they deserve to be heard. They are so inspiring!
This is our "why."
Students can do more than tradition expects and they prove it in our model every day and every year.
