Duty of Care: How FDKM will move forward in light of new CDC recommendations
New Covid-19 Policy begins June 1st
We're excited to see Covid positive cases go in a downward trend and news that more and more of our Krav Members are receiving vaccinations. We are excited to announce that as of June 1st all of our FDKM instructors and Staff who will be working this summer are all fully vaccinated. With that said and the recent CDC and Virginia State Government new guidelines about social distancing and masking have changed, we will update our policies as well.
All guidelines listed will be effective beginning June 1st. Masking will still be required at all times for the remainder of May. If you have specific concerns or questions please do not hesitate to ask us at info@firstdefensekravmaga.com
As of June 1st those who are fully vaccinated (second shot completed on or before May 18th), with proof of vaccination may train with out a mask. Once verification is complete, we will allow vaccinated members to freely move around the studio with out a mask if one chooses to do so.
We kindly ask that individuals who are not vaccinated to continue to wear masks while inside the facility and during training. This includes all Adults, Teens, Youth, and Kids who are not fully vaccinated. If you choose to not share your vaccination status, we also respectfully ask that you continue to stay masked during your duration inside the facility. We will revisit this policy when new recommendations come out about the spread of Covid-19 amongst those who are not currently vaccinated.
- If you are vaccinated and feel more comfortable wearing a face mask, please continue to do so.
- A temperature check will be done upon arrival. If a low grade temperature is evident, we will ask you to wait a few minutes at reception, and retake your temp. If the temp persists, we may ask you to refrain from training for the evening.
- Please to continue to practice good hygiene such as hand washing and/or sanitation. We've added an additional hand sanitizer dispenser near our entrance.
- Partnering/pairing and social distancing is still at the discretion of the participant. If you wish to not partner and/or socially distance during class. Please notify the instructor beforehand.
- The water fountains are open! We will have disinfectant wipes available to wipe down the nozzle before and after use. But bring your own water bottle too if you have one available.
- Community equipment such as gloves, grappling gloves, and shin guards are not available. Please be sure to bring your own equipment for use. We do sell training equipment in our Krav Shop
- If you believe that you've been exposed to Covid or tested positive, please notify us ASAP. Especially if you have attended classes during that time. Please refrain from training in person during the recommended 10-14 days after exposure.
- If you have a cold or recovering from a cold/flu, we generally ask that you stay home until you're fully recovered. If you suspect you may have a cold, we highly recommend wearing a mask.
With Summer travel near, for those who are not vaccinated and do decide to travel. We ask that you quarantine for the recommended 10 days before returning to training. Here at First Defense the community's health and safety is a priority. We are trying to minimize the transmission and spread of Covid as best to our abilities within our facility and training practices. As business owners it's our Duty of Care. We hope everyone will continue their efforts to help limit the spread of Covid-19.

Attendance Cards are Baaaaaaaack!
Pick up your attendance card before the start of class
Attendance cards were put in storage over the course of the past year due to Covid. They also were not introduced to the newest FDKM'ers who also joined us in the last 14 months. With classes picking up again, we will be brining back these cards in June.
Why? What are they for? What do I do?
Easy Peazy Process!
- Upon arrival, after doing a quick temperature check. Locate the Card file. It will be at the front desk.
- Locate your card. It is alphabetized by your last name.
- Give your card to the instructor and/or assistant instructor at the beginning of class when you line up. (please arrive to class on time)
- The instructor/assistant will give the card to the front desk so that your attendance will be recorded.
- We will refile them for you to pick up again for your next class.
What's the purpose of attendance cards?
- Records the number of times you have attended class and which class. This information is used to determine who may be eligible for testing
- This also helps the student visually see how often they've been in to train, how many more classes they need to attend before testing, and a reminder of eligibility of what classes are open to them.
- Denotes what level class you are eligible for and what current rank you hold. This helps our instructor to make sure you are attending the correct class.
- Will annotate if you can train mask free

New Summer Schedule is Here!
So there are some major changes to our Summer Schedule starting June 1st. One of the biggest changes is that we're phasing out our online zoom classes, and bringing back more in person training. We will still continue to stream classes on specific days. The second biggest Change to our schedule is that you'll see that Jiu-Jitsu classes have been added. We're welcoming Function Jiu-Jitsu Club to hold classes here at FDKM. More information about the Jiu-Jitsu club is noted below in our news letter.
You can download a pdf copy of our 2021 Summer Schedule Here , pick up a hard copy at the front desk, or visit our website to see the most current schedule. We will also provide new streaming links to classes when available. If you have any questions about the new schedule please contact us at info@firstdefensekravmaga.com

Dave Porter and his Jiu-Jitsu Club will be holding classes at FDKM
Did you notice the addition of Jiu-jitsu classes to our schedule? FDKM is welcoming black belt instructors Dave Porter, Joe Rudd, and Jason Kammerdiemer and their Jiu-Jitsu club - Function Jiu-jitsu to our facility. The guys needed a space to train & get their club going, so we decided to open our doors to Dave and his students to share our space and community.
Function's Club will begin to hold classes beginning Wednesday, June 3rd.
For current FDKM members who have a Full Membership with us and are interested in cross-training with Function Jiu-Jitsu please contact Ann for more information at ann@firstdefensekravmaga.com

The Domestic Violence Discussion Webinar

The Domestic Violence Discussion
On the evening of June 17 at 7:15pm, please join fellow Krav Maga instructor and the host of the Domestic Violence Discussion Podcast, Ariel Gliboff, for a discussion about relationship red flags and how you can create a basic safety plan.
The red flags are the warning signs that indicate abuse may start to occur or is possibly already happening. And having a safety plan can ensure your well-being if you are living with or leaving an abuser.
This is a free event, but registration is required so we can send you the Zoom meeting information. A registration link will be available right after the Memorial Day weekend.

Welcome Rachel to the Team!

We have a new assistant for our Krav Junior Divison!
We like to introduce our new Assistant in our Krav Junior Division Classes, welcome Rachel Okotete! Rachel has been training and helping out with our youngest Kravers for the past month now. She's been doing a great job! The kids really enjoy having her help Coach Nick on mat too! We're really excited to have her part of our team.
Here's a little bit more about Rachel:
I am a current student studying information technology at George Washington university! And hoping to go into IT management once I graduate. I am hardworking, charismatic, organized and very collaborative! When I’m not working or studying I like to play tennis twice a week or go for a run in the city. I’m also an animal lover! And dog walker as well.

It's that time of year again, SUMMER! With that comes Josh's hiatus from Krav Maga. He's pursuing a summer job that conflicts with teaching and training at FDKM through the summer months. Hopefully, if his school schedule allows, we'll see him back in the fall.
Have a great summer Josh!!!! Everyone will miss you! Especially Jeroen :-)
