Children Find their Voice through Music and Fun with Julie Stepanek
As a great way to start a summer day, Julie Stepanek gave a small concert for kids at the EB Public Library.
In the early 2000s, Julie was the guitarist in the band Calamine. She recorded many different songs for them, including their most popular song, “Trampoline." The band also recorded for the TV show Sealab 2021, an adult cartoon series about a futuristic underwater expedition, which was released on Adult Swim.
Julie is now teaching people how to play the ukulele and guitar all around Massachusetts. At the "Find your Voice" event, hosted by the East Bridgewater Library, Julie encouraged the kids to sing or play along. One song housed three words that were complete gibberish, and yet Julie found a way to make it sound cohesive and fun. Along with various children's songs, poems and tunes she made up herself, she also brought various props to add to this playful energy, such as small maraca eggs and light pieces of colorful cloth. This encouraged a crowd of kids to jump up and play around with the music, shaking along, or spinning and tossing around these handkerchiefs in the air. It truly was an endearing sight to behold.

Historical Tidbit:
The Elmwood Fire House
and Fire Company, Continued
As a part of East Bridgewater since the turn of the nineteenth century, the Elmwood Fire House remains intact and a part of history. It was constructed in 1888 and was home to the Elmwood Fire Company, memorialized here through the memories of Betty Belknap Stirling.
.
Her memories solidify East Bridgewater as the hardworking, proud and close-knit community that it remains now. "[T]he driver of the Elmwood fire truck, Art Keith, lived next door to me. On warm summer nights, I’d hear his phone ring out his bedroom window, informing him about a fire in town," she remembers.
Stirling recalls with pride the efficiency of Art Keith and the rest of the crew. "He’d jump out of bed and into his driving boots, which were always next to his bed, and zoom down to the fire station. As soon as some other volunteer firemen arrived, Art would zip down the street to the fire, usually near E.B. center. I’ve witnessed that truck leaving the station many times, sometimes with the men hanging onto the truck as Art stepped on the gas pedal."
.
It's clear that memories of the Elmwood Fire House and Company are still held in great esteem. Stirling even exalts in their capability, "[w]e Elmwoodites always claimed that the Elmwood firetruck was the first one at all the fires! Probably not always true!" Well, we like to think it is!

Climate Can-Do: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
Everything we throw away contributes to polluting the air we breathe and the water we drink! We can minimize the amount of pollution by using a simple method: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!
Reduce is first. It's the most important! To reduce the waste we produce, we reduce the number of products we purchase. Not only will being mindful of your purchases reduce the amount of waste on our planet, but it will also save you a a lot of money.
Reuse: Another way to help our environment is reusing the items and products that we might have thrown away unconsciously. Instead of tossing that shirt you no longer wear, donate it to someone who would wear it. Instead of purchasing a case of plastic water bottles, invest in a reusable water bottle. They are environment friendly and will keep your beverage cold.
Recycle: Recycling stops our trash from wrecking the environment. You would be surprise d by the number of things that can be recycled, from mattresses to batteries; metal scraps to clothing and textiles. The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection provides a search bar on their website where you can type the name of a waste item and it will tell you how to recycle or dispose of it.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences explains: "Waste, and how we choose to handle it, affects our world's environment. The environment is everything around you including the air, water, land, plants, and man-made things. The waste we create has to be carefully controlled to be sure that it does not harm your environment and your health." The best way we can help protect our environment and health is to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

Joanne Gramazio Receives Certificate of Appreciation
On Monday, July 17th at the East Bridgewater Select Board Meeting, Joanne Gramazio was recognized for her dedication to cleaning up the streets of East Bridgewater. Since February, Joanne has been spending her time to picking up trash that has been carelessly thrown on the side of the roads. In about five months, Joanne has already filled 86 bags of trash! During the meeting she explains, "It really bothered me that there’s so much trash on the sides of the road. After work, I would start on certain streets and pick up the trash. Today, I have picked up 86 bags. My goal was to do 65 for my 65th birthday. Well, I’m already at 86 and I’m 65 so I’m going to keep going." Not only has Joanne picked up an extensive amount of trash, but has also beautified some areas of East Bridgewater, specifically the island at the corner of Walnut Street and Union Street, by planting flowers and putting down mulch.
The certificate reads, in part: "This certificate of appreciation is on behalf of the citizens of the town of East Bridgewater. The Select Board would like to extend their sincere appreciation to you, Joanne Gramazio, for unselfishly giving your time, willingness, and energy to beautify the town." Joanne's efforts most certainly deserve recognition, and we congratulate her for receiving this certificate and thank her for her dedication to the community!

"The only person that ever stumbles is a guy moving forward. You don't stumble backwards; you stumble forward, and you never stumble when you're stationary. So don't worry about stumbling. Keep pushing it forward. ~ James Carville
"There's so much happenstance, so many accidents - stumbling into something and finding it interesting and living with it over time and building on it. It's okay to work from doubt. You need to be willing to not know.": ~ Ellen Gallagher
"In the end, it all comes to choices to turn stumbling blocks into stepping stones."
~ Amber Frey
"Failing is what we do, or stumbling is what we do on a daily basis." ~ Sandra Bullock
Stumbling is DEFINITELY what I do ... maybe even daily. Somehow making order out of the messy world around me; and there is always someone, usually a masculine - type human, who pretends they are in charge. As I stumble on past, they stick out their foot, not necessarily on purpose. But the result is the same.
As I wipe the pie off my face .. I think, "Why are they in charge? They cant seem to keep their feet to themselves." And " Tying my shoelaces together seemed logical at the time."
Stumble on, dear folks, its the only way we are going to get anywhere : ) ~ Jacquie
