Nutrition Education Program (NEP)

Nebr. Extension Fosters Health

The Nebraska Extension NEP helps low-income families to make healthier food and physical activity choices on a limited budget.

NEP presents hands-on, interactive educational programs in over 400 community partner sites each year, reaching thousands of individuals and families ranging from early childhood to older adults.

A major emphasis in 2023 and 2024 has been collaborating with New American audiences to identify and address their nutrition and health needs. NEP in Lincoln has impacted over 600 people in New American families.

Somebody Who Looks Like Me

In healthcare, representation matters. Mothers and families have better outcomes when they receive culturally sensitive care. In the Community Breastfeeding Educator (CBE) program, mothers find breastfeeding support from someone that looks like them, speaks their language and shares a similar cultural background.

This program, which has positively impacted hundreds of women, is now in danger because their grant funding has expired. Three of the group, who have pursued advanced certifications are determined to find financial support for the 38 educators who are passionate about healthier moms and babies.

Infant and Maternal Mortality Rates

Nebraska’s infant mortality rate is higher than most of the developed world as well as many states. In addition, Nebraska’s racial and ethnic disparities are much worse than the U.S. average. Our preterm birth rate among Black women is 50% higher than the rate among all other women.

For the health of mothers and their babies, this year at Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, we are directing all our Give to Lincoln Day donations to our programs that work to increase access to prenatal care and support breastfeeding. Please help support the work we do.

Early giving starts May 1 here.

Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving and protecting the health, wellness, and fitness of Lincoln's children, families, and seniors.

We work to improve wellness policies and conduct community level health research. We collaborate with community partners to promote healthy weights through good nutrition and fitness, improve child and maternal health by supporting breastfeeding, create better patient outcomes by increasing cancer screening and vaccination rates, improving chronic disease management, increasing preventative outreach, and standardizing clinical practices. During public health crises like the COVID 19 pandemic, we help to protect community health by providing science and evidence-based information.
Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln also works to improve health equity in our community, addressing disparities among racial and ethnic populations with the highest burden of chronic disease.  Systemic racism is also a threat to community health. We stand in solidarity with everyone who is fighting for greater equality and justice for all.
