OPS/NOW Meeting and Community Meal

Please join us for the first community meal of the new year on Wednesday, January 14! Everyone is invited to gather in the Henry Young Fellowship Hall for dinner at 6:00 p.m. and stay for continued discussion of our church community and mission.

Our discussions will take place in two committees:

  • OPS (Operations) Committee—Guides the work of stewardship and giving, finances, budget, personnel, upkeep of building and grounds.
  • NOW Committee—Guides programmatic work of the congregation, including music and worship, Christian formation, earth care, gun violence prevention, garden ministry, outreach to the community, Guatemala partnership and overseas mission.

Even if you are not sure about serving on a “committee,” please join us for the meal and a chance to get to know others in our church community.

Volunteer Needed

We are needing to find someone to help with writing and editing articles for the Westminster Weekly. This would be once a week, preferably on Wednesdays. If you're willing to assist with this, please contact Megan Cahill in the church office for more details.

Advocacy and Action for the Middle East

On January 13, 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm. in the Gathering Room, please join the Middle East Prayer Group for an ongoing conversation about advocacy and action. For more information, contact Tricia Lloyd-Sidle, revtjls@gmail.com.

Prayer Group for Middle East

Feel free to join us Thursdays on Zoom, in-person, or both. This group has enabled such support for one another as we all struggle to cope with the tragedies in the Middle East and the on and off cease fires and prisoner releases.

We would be grateful to have others join us. Email Soni at soni.castleberry@gmail.com to get the Zoom link and be added to the group email list for regular communication.

Choir Practice

Choir practice is held every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Please feel free to come and see if this is something you might be interested in.

Did You Know?

What Presbyterians Believe about the Authority of Confessions in the Reformed Tradition

The Reformed tradition is unique in its understanding of the authority of its confessions. The most revealing clue to this unique understanding is the great number of confessions it has produced. Other Protestant confessional traditions have been content with only a few confessional statements written by a few people within narrow geographical or historical limits. All the Lutheran confessions, for instance, were written by a few Germans in Germany between 1529 and 1580.

Authoritative Roman Catholic teaching comes from church councils or from the Pope. But from beginning of the Reformation wherever the Reformed church spread, Reformed Christians made new confessions of their faith, first city by city then country by country. The confessions of Bern, Basel, Zurich, Geneva, and other Swiss cities were followed by one or more confessions written for Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, Hungary, and Scotland.

The great period of confession writing came to an end for two centuries after the 17th century (because under the influence of Protestant orthodoxy the Reformed churches lost sight of the reason for multiple confessions and because the liberal theology that dominated the 18th and 19th centuries was suspicious of confessional restraint). But the 20th century has seen a revival of Reformed confessional writing. Reformed churches have participated in the preparation of well over 30 new confessions that have been completed or are in process.
