Let Acupressure Point You in the Right Direction
|
|
We’ve done several articles on acupressure and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) in the past. Our last article was on January 6
th
of last year about how EFT helped Boo the dog overcome his fears.
Why does EFT work? It is based on acupressure points! These points correlate with certain organs and emotions for potentially powerful results for both people and animals.
While some animals (and perhaps pet parents) are not fond of acupuncture, which is applying needles to specific acupressure points, plain ol’ acupressure uses the gentle touch of the fingers. What animal doesn’t like that!
Acupressure has many applications though.

Did you know that the Gentle Leader for dogs is based on acupressure points for calming? The holistic vet I worked with used a similar but more expensive face collar with her clients and she saw amazing results. Allison even used the Gentle Leader with her dog Petey to help him chill out while walking. When she got him, he had been a street dog so didn’t know how to act around people and other dogs. She started off by placing the Gentle Leader on him in the house, when she was home. She did not attach a leash to it. That way he could get acclimated to wearing it as if it was no big deal. This face collar is light weight but can take dogs a bit to get accustomed to wearing it. After about a wee, Petey wore the collar as if it were a part of him. Allison started clipping the leash to it in the house to practice with him. He did great and in no time she able to take him out for walks. This face collar had a wonderful effect that gave him a sense of security and peace even in new situations. After several months, Petey was able to transition to a regular collar for walking. And look at him now with Allison!

Did you know that the body ‘wrapping’ technique is also based on acupressure points? Wrapping is a way to help an animal feel calm and safe from their fears. While it doesn’t work for every animal, it does work for many. There are various shirts and vests on the market, even for cats. But did you know that you can do your own body wrap or create your own shirt?
To do your own body wrap:
- Get an ace type elastic bandage of appropriate size for your animal. They come in widths of 2-6 inches.
- When you wrap their body, keep in mind that you want to do it snug enough so it feels like a gentle hug and not tight. This is a simple half-body wrap which tends to work on most animals instead of having to do a full body wrap.
- Place the bandage across their chest.
- Take the ends of the bandage to where they are of equal length and make an X over their shoulders.
- Bring the ends of the bandage underneath their stomach and cross them over.
- Bring the ends up and tie them loosely over the top of the lower back. Make sure you put the knot away from the spine.
To do your own shirt:
- Get an organic cotton shirt that you feel will fit your animal. Conventional cotton has been sprayed with pesticides.
- Put the shirt on so that their tail pokes through the neck opening.
- Tie the ends of the shirt across their chest.
- If the shirt doesn’t provide enough relief for them, you may want to consider sewing an ace bandage onto the shirt to give them a more secure feeling.
Make sure you get a natural color of bandage or shirt as it is preferred to not use chemical based dyes on your animal. However, color can help to create an even greater impact for your animal. Light blue is calming. Light pink can be wonderful for separation anxiety. Christmas green is grounding. Yellow is uplifting.
Muscle testing
can tell you what color is ideal for your animal. If you just want to pick one multi-purpose color, light blue is the way to go. If you want to use color on your wrap or shirt, get a natural dye and do it yourself.
Speaking of fears, did you know that fear is associated with the kidneys and the winter season? On humans, this is the collarbone point. On animals, it is the chest area. This is just one of nine major acupressure points used in EFT but a timely one. Remember it is important for you and your animals to get the necessary water the body needs. This helps support the kidney function. You can tap on your collarbone point to help you overcome your fears. For EFT with animals, it’s ideal to use
muscle testing
see if they should have EFT and if so, the application method.
Remember, acupressure points are powerful and the last thing you want to do is make your animal uncomfortable. But for some animals, it is exactly what they need.
But the way to offer EFT to animals may surprise you:
- The most common technique that shows up is for the pet parent to tap on themselves for their animal. This tends to happen because the pet parent needs EFT just as much as their animal. They may even be contributing to what is going on with their animal.
- You can tap on a stuffed animal to represent your animal. This is called the surrogate method.
- Rarely should an animal be tapped on directly as tapping is not the same as touching and holding a point as in basic acupressure. Let’s face it, most animals are not going to appreciate your good intentions to tap, tap away.

EFT is just one of the many wonders of using acupressure points for wellness for both people and animals. Hopefully, you will be inspired to point yourself in the right direction.
Acupressure Blessings!
