Agenda
1. CONGRESS: reports, descriptions, plans going forward.
We'll explore the plans for Congress and how the workshops being planned can help WILPF women to organize for action, be more strategic, and become stronger allies for the causes we support.
2. FEATURED SPEAKER on the Role of WILPF in advancing the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact to outlaw all war. Author and Yale Law School Professor SCOTT SHAPIRO discusses his new book which focuses on the global movement to outlaw war that culminated in the 1928 Kellogg-Briand Pact (aka The Paris Peace Pact) and WILPF's role in supporting the Pact.
"The Internationalists: How a Radical Plan to Outlaw War Remade the World", details the vital role played by peace activists and organizations (including the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom) in the lead up to the signing of the Pact and the alliances made between Jane Addams, Salmon Levinson, John Dewey, among others. (For a photograph of the WILPF from 1922 that will appear in our book,
see picture 5.
One of the main reasons we wrote our book was not only to describe to the general public the story and success of the Peace Pact and the outlawry of war, but also to alert them to the dangers of our current political situations. We believe that the international community is now facing a perilous moment, when settled understandings about war and peace are being unmoored and the modern global order is unravelling. Our book is a plea to return to the anti-war vision of the group of activists and thinkers we call "The Internationalists" and to renew our commitment to their anti-war message.
3. MEMBER FORUM: Reports on the June 17th events supporting the Women's March To Ban The Bomb campaign.
Be ready to report on:
- What you did
- How it went
- How many people worked with you
- How many people you estimate may have become more aware of the Ban Treaty because of your efforts.
4. MEMBER FORUM: The ONE WILPF Calls going forward.
We will have results from the SURVEY we sent out to all call registrants since June 2016, when these calls began. We'll discuss the results and share hopes and suggestions for future calls.
