Introducing Our New Legal Navigator Program

With a Pro Bono Innovation Grant from LSC received in 2022, we are in the process of expanding our pro bono expungement program to bring on non-attorney volunteers from local paralegal programs, law schools, and community groups to serve as legal navigators. These volunteers will work directly with clients to address the burdensome administrative tasks necessary to apply for expungements, like gathering court documents or obtaining fingerprints, to increase the number of people who can successfully expunge their records.

After the enactment of Michigan’s Clean Slate Legislation in April 2021, hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents with past convictions became eligible to expunge their records. Clearing one's record can improve housing security, employment prospects, and financial stability. However, an expungement can be a daunting undertaking. One client shared his gratitude for the support of LSSCM staff during his expungement process:

“When it comes to things having to do with law and court systems, I [felt] a bit hopeless and intimidated right from the beginning. I am very fortunate to have the chance to move forward without the weight of my past hindering the opening of doors that could make my life and my family's life much easier.”

With the help of legal navigators, clients will be guided through each step of the complex expungement process from start to finish. It is our goal that our new program will lead to many more people successfully clearing their records. Our staff will continue to work on identifying, investigating, and strategizing to overcome the barriers clients face in seeking expungements.
