September 10 Meeting Recap
"Firsthand Experiences with Mental Illness"
Last Friday, September 10, we were fortunate to feature a panel of NAMI Ramsey County board members who helped identify practices in how we can meet the needs of community members.

RCLLG members are excited to take this information back to their communities and organizations.
Thank you to our guests:

  • Katy Jo Turner, Moderator
  • Mindy Greiling, Panelist
  • Jennifer LaForgia, Panelist
  • Carrie Roach, Panelists
Meeting Summary

This meeting was on-point with RCLLG’s 2021 focus on mental health, and RCLLG members came away with ideas and potential answers to questions such as “Where can we add our voice? How can we help? How can we battle the stigma on mental health?” Katy Jo, Mindy, Carrie, and Jennifer provided real-life examples and case studies that demonstrate the need for reformation as well as what practices are working well.

The RCLLG Collective Action Workgroup will be re-convening to discuss these matters. If you’d like to join this group, who meets from 7:30 – 8:30 AM every third Thursday, please email RCLLG@fusionLP.org

How Can We Help?

How can RCLLG best support the needs of our community members with mental illness and how they receive support?

  • Share your own personal stories with mental health.
  • Be aware of how your city, school, or organization supports mental illness.
  • Engage yourself and your personal and professional networks in mental illness trainings.
  • Attend NAMI programs or invite NAMI members to speak at your own.
  • Support legislation (see below) and advocate for funding.

How can RCLLG support mental health legislation?

  1. Mindy suggests supporting Mental Health Courts and funding to support these.
  2. RCLLG can advocate for mental illness training for emergency response teams. Trainings can help participants identify types of mental illness.
  3. RCLLG members can visit the NAMI legislative agenda to identify legislation that can be supported e.g., the Voluntary Engagement provision can be supported.

What speaks loudest to legislators?

  1. Multiple groups advocating for one or a few common goals – having multiple groups behind the same goal.
  2. Partnering with current movements.
  3. Personal stories from constituents.
  4. Partnering with a legislator who can be a champion for the issue – someone with personal relation to the issue at hand.
