Greetings!

This week we're presenting Arts League of Lowell, Worcester Art Museum and Newport Art Museum.

No one creates art in a vacuum and this week's three exhibits show how the themes, techniques and practices pioneered by masters of the craft from previous years have been passed down through generations to be innovated upon and adapted for the times by contemporary artists.

The May/June edition of Artscope Magazine is now available. Want more Artscope? Visit artscopemagazine.com and sign up for online access to see all of our articles, reviews, spotlights and profiles any time, anywhere.

in Lowell, Massachusetts from May 9 to July 6

Arts League of Lowell presents Homages: Inspired by the Masters, a group show that invites artists who work across mediums and styles to create work that, as the title suggests, pays homage to another artist who inspires them. As a part of the exhibition, displaying artists were encouraged to include with their work a short paragraph explaining to whom and how their work pays homage. These paragraphs will be displayed alongside the art itself. An artists reception will be held on Saturday, May 17 from 3 to 5 p.m.

The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Arts League of Lowell is located at 307 Market Street, Lowell, MA. For more information, please visit here.

in Worcester, Massachusetts through July 27

Worcester Art Museum presents From the Vault: Collecting Tapestries at the Worcester Art Museum, an exhibition of nearly 30 works that are "rarely on view due to their sensitivity to light - including 12 large-format tapestries and tapestry fragments spanning antiquity to the present day." From a 16th century Flemish tapestry that measures 12' x 26', to the contemporary work of Los Angeles-based artist Diedrick Brackens, the Worcester Art Museum's collection of tapestries and textiles shows the evolution and lineage of the medium over time. The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Worcester Art Museum is located at 55 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA . For more information, please visit here.

Sean Landers: Lost at Sea at Newport Art Museum

in Newport, Rhode Island from May 10 to December 29

Newport Art Museum presents Sean Landers: Lost at Sea, a show that puts the maritime-inspired work of painter Sean Landers in conversation with pieces by Winslow Homer, pulled by Landers from the museum's permanent collection. According to a curatorial statement, "Through depictions of shipwrecks, lighthouses, and turbulent waters, Landers explores themes of adventure, loss, and artistic immortality—questioning what it means for a painting, or an artist, to be ‘lost at sea.’" Homer's work, in dialog with Landers', shows how the sea has always been a thematic and visual constant in the art of New England painters. The museum is open Wedneday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 12 to 4 p.m. Newport Art Museum is located at 76 Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI. For more information, please visit here.
