~ Building Community One Positive Story at a Time.
| | |
A Night to Remember
On July 10th, the community gathered to enjoy a lively and well-attended concert featuring Betty Deyeso alongside the talented band Bak-To-Bak. As part of this summer’s concert series, the performance brought energy, nostalgia, and fun to an audience of all ages.
With Betty Deyeso’s dynamic vocals and Bak-To-Bak’s polished sound, the group delivered a memorable set filled with classic hits and fan favorites. Concertgoers filled the venue with lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and plenty of dancing, creating a warm and festive atmosphere under the summer sky.
Thanks to the talent of the performers and the enthusiasm of the crowd, the night was a wonderful success and a true celebration of music and community. More great concerts are on the way as the summer series continues!
Thank you to the Massachusetts Cultural Council for funding these great events!

Historical Tidbit:
Washing Machine
Recently, I was reading a journal that my great-grandfather had written in 1905. Among the pages, I came across a short note entitled, Washing Machines:
"A home without a washing machine today is as rare as one without a telephone or radio, but then it was a great exception. I bought a 1900 washer in 1904, and it was my job to get up early and operate it. The motive, (its) power, was a couple of strong springs that had to be kept in motion."
The earliest manual washing machines imitated the motion of the human hand on the washboard by using a lever to move one curved surface over another and rubbing clothes between two ribbed surfaces. This type of washer was first patented in the United States in 1846 and survived as late as 1927 in the Montgomery Ward catalog. The first electric clothes washers, in which a motor rotated the tub, were introduced into America about 1900. The motor was not protected beneath the machine, and water often dripped into it, causing short-circuits and jolting shocks. By 1911, it was possible to buy oscillating, cylinder, domestic washing machines with sheet metal tubs mounted on angle-iron frames with perforated metal or wooden slat cylinders inside.
Respectfully submitted, Sue Basile

Climate Can-Do:
Farm Fresh Eggs
The eggs that you buy may have an impact on your overall health.
Knowing where your eggs come from is important to understanding the nutritional
values that you are getting from your eggs and the quality of the eggs you buy.
Overall, eggs that come from free-range chickens are preferable.
Free-range: chickens have access to the outdoors and can
participate in natural behaviors such as nesting and laying eggs. This is the
style most commonly used by smaller local farms.
Cage-free: chickens are not kept in cages, but have little to no
access to the outdoors.
Studies have shown the following benefits of free-range eggs
over cage-free eggs:
⅓ less cholesterol
¼ less saturated fat
⅔ more Vitamin A
3X more Vitamin E
7X more beta-carotene
2X Omega-3 fatty acids
In addition, free-range eggs are 6X higher in Vitamin D, have
significantly more B Vitamins, and contain more antioxidants.
Make sure to shop locally for high-quality, nutritional eggs!

SEEing to Lead
Check out this YouTube channel by Dr. Chris Jones, principal of Whitman-Hanson Regional High School!
"This channel is for my personal/professional journey. It contains musings, attempts at new ventures, and my overall messaging of being purposeful and acting with integrity while building character."
"Remember those times when you saw someone and made up a story about them? What if you actually spoke to them to find out the real story?
Remember when you felt an awkward silence when you were in a group that wasn't talking to each other as they waited for the next distraction? What if you struck up a meaningful conversation?
Remember the time you passed up an opportunity to interact with someone because you wanted to connect with the unknown individuals on your phone instead? What if you resisted that urge and increased your connection in person?
Humans are social beings and thrive from that personal connection. Reach out to someone and connect. You will be amazed how much it increases your awareness and happiness."

Today, I shall be, in Shakespearean terms, a dankish pottle-deep giglet. Or a bootless folly-fallen dewberry.
