Feel the Impact

Your support directly impacts children like…

Rose!

Rose is determined. She loves books, music, and making friends at school.

Down syndrome, a global developmental delay including mobility and speech limitations, and profound deafness can make it difficult for Rose to connect with others and explore her world.

Rose’s mother, Kim, knew she needed help supporting Rose’s growth and development. Pacekids surrounded Rose with opportunities to adapt and thrive.

“I saw courage in Rose, and I saw a lot of potential,” said Karina, Rose’s in-home therapeutic aide. “I knew if I had the right approach, she would be willing to work to get stronger.”

Rose spent three years with Karina by her side building her strength using a standing frame.

“One day, Rose stood up by herself while playing with her big sister,” shared Kim. “That made her so happy – I was amazed.”

Rose also gained independence by learning to feed herself and wash her hands.

“Our time with Pacekids has been exciting,” said Kim. “It makes me hopeful for the future for Rose."

Staff Spotlight

Karina

In-home Therapeutic Aide

Karina has been working for Pacekids since October 2012 and was instrumental in Rose’s encouraging progress.

When in your life did you know or learn that you wanted to work with children?

“I think when I was a kid my experience with my family in my hometown was very valuable because I have a special needs brother. My parents, all my siblings and I chose to care for him in our home with our own resources. My family all aspired to be doctors or teachers, so I studied to be a language teacher.”

Did anyone or anything specifically inspire you to work with children with diverse needs?

“During my childhood my mother was sick, so I had to look after myself and my siblings. I always wanted to work with vulnerable people to help them be strong to be able to advocate for themselves. I think I am a very empathetic person – that’s what I identify myself as.”

What is your favorite thing about working with children?

“I mostly like working with children because I have the opportunity to be a positive part of their lives. I just like that feeling that I am connecting with kids. They are pure souls, they are spontaneous, and their kindness is very straight forward. Children are the most honest people you can deal with – you never see an expression that isn’t sincere. I just like to be with children all the time.”

What is one thing you want everyone to know about children with diverse needs?

“Children with diverse needs are as intelligent as everyone else. All they need is kindness and respect.”

“Karina gave me hope, too. She really pushed me as a mom, and reminded me that, just because Rose is different, you can still do things with her.” – Kim, Pacekids parent

Donor Profile

Jeff Evans

Jeff is a long-time supporter of Pacekids. He helped make our new Mountain classroom a reality!

Jeff saw first-hand the joy a person feels when they support a cause they are passionate about.

“I helped my father plan donations to causes that were important to him,” shared Jeff. "The feeling I got from that afterwards was more personal and very fulfilling."

This inspired Jeff to establish his own Donor Advised Fund allowing him to give to organizations like Pacekids.

“To hear the support I’ve given to Pacekids translates, in some small part, to a child learning how to stand is extremely rewarding,” said Jeff. “Especially when you think of how that growth is going to translate over the rest of their lives.”

Join Jeff in helping hundreds of diverse needs children and their families this year.
