Thursday Get Togethers Resume Tomorrow

At Sherwood Island Pavilion

Following a break for the 4th of July holiday last week, Thursday morning gatherings of Y's Men resume tomorrow (July 11). Coffee, donuts, bagels, and conversation from 9:00 to 10:00 am every Thursday are planned through August 29.

Plan to attend tomorrow and in the future. No reservations are needed. Just show up and enjoy the free refreshments and conversation.

Following the social hour, an optional walking group forms up to tour Sherwood Island.

Special thanks to the Y's Men team that brings the refreshments. They are Al Landis, Bob Israely, Brian Baxendale, Lou Rolla, and Dick Kalt. Baxter Urist is the organizer of the Thursday morning socials.

Don't Miss Y's Men Tuesday Evening Picnics at Compo Beach

Summer wouldn't be summer without the Y's Men Tuesday evening picnics at Compo Beach.

Arranged by Y's Man Jon Fox, the gatherings take place on South Beach "642 feet to the right of the cannons." There is no need for a beach sticker. Simply tell them at the entrance that you are attending the Y's Men picnic. It begins about 4:30 to 5:00 pm. Bring your own chairs, finger food, and your choice of beverage perhaps to share (no glass containers are allowed).

If weather is bad (too hot, too cold, rainy), Jon says, "Stay home. Otherwise, just come and enjoy." If additional information is needed, contact Jon by clicking here.

Y's Men to Visit Vintage Car Restorer This Saturday;

Only Four Places Remain If You Want to Attend

The Y's Men Trips & Events Committee, under the chairmanship of Bill Blaufuss, is offering a tour of Red Line Restorations, a vintage car restorer in Black Rock, this Saturday, July 13. Redline is a world-class automotive restoration facility that was founded in 2003 by Colton Amster.

The tour will be conducted from 10:00 am to noon followed by lunch at the new Elicit Brewery on Black Rock Turnpike.

Only four tickets remain available, so if you are interested in attending, send an email immediately to Ron Holtz at ronholtz.ysmen@gmail.com. Besides giving him your name, indicate if you are carpooling, and if you will be attending lunch at Elicit Brewery following the tour.

Global Issues Discussion Group Meets This Monday

The Global Issues Discussion Group (GIDG) will meet this Monday (July 15) at 9:00 am in Room 203 at the Church. The Group plans to focus on the French election and France's new government and then discuss elections in the rest of Europe.

Y's Man Lewis Zucker will serve as Moderator.

Y's Men Hoot Owls Perform on July 18

Hoot Owls, the Y's Men singing group, will be performing at Atria Darien, an assisted living facility, on Thursday, July 18, at 2:00 pm.

Performing mostly at senior centers and senior living facilities, the group concentrates on old songs that their audiences appreciate. If you are interested in singing (reading music not necessary) and entertaining local seniors, please consider joining the Hoot Owls. Contact Hoot Owls Chair Bob Leng at 203-227-7672 or leng_7@msn.com. Bob comments, "Come join us. It's lots of fun."

Y's Men Annual Hot Dog Festival Set for Tuesday, July 23

Every Tuesday evening throughout the summer Y's Men and their spouses and guests gather at Compo Beach South for a picnic beginning about 4:30 to 5:00 pm. They bring their own food and beverages.

On Tuesday, July 23, however, the food will be provided free of charge. The main attraction will be hot dogs in a festival to raise money for Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang.

Goodspeed Opera House

Y's Men See "South Pacific" At Goodspeed Opera House

A busload of Y's Men and guests traveled yesterday (Tuesday, June 9) to the Goodspeed Opera House (built in 1876) in East Haddam, CT to see "South Pacific." Organizer Dewey Loselle arranged for lunch before the show at nearby Gelston House, built in 1736. Both the food and the show were terrific. They didn't allow filming in the theater but you can sample the show by clicking here.
