Unleashed: Pets of the Performing Arts: Through February 7, 2027
Exhibition at the Library for the Peforming Arts at Lincoln Center
History abounds with performing artists devoted to their animal companions. From Billie Holiday’s boxer Mister and Anna Pavlova’s pet swan Jack to Larry Kramer’s beloved hound Molly, animals have quietly shaped the lives and work of the world’s most iconic performers. Whether inspiring choreographers with their natural grace, enduring life on tour, or offering solace to opera divas battered by critics, these companions were far more than bystanders.
Though often relegated to sidebars and backstage footnotes, pets have played a vital role in U.S. performing arts history. The headlines they sparked fueled celebrity culture. Their instincts for rhythm, movement, and nonverbal expression influenced groundbreaking choreography. Beyond the stage, their quiet loyalty revealed a human tenderness in artists whose public personas often kept audiences at a distance.
