Finding Your Joy

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, we often find ourselves worrying about the perfect present, the bountiful table or travel arrangements as we fit in visits to family and friends. We strive to recreate the perfection of Christmas past (sometimes forgetting the not-so-perfect ones).

For many, it can be the best of times and the worst of times. We miss those who are no longer with us at this time of year. It is darker, colder and snowy in Mulmur. Work towards the end of the year can be intense.  Money may be tight as we try to do our best to bring joy to others.

Despite the pressures, we can find our joy in small things – the glow of Christmas lights, festive music, the excitement and joy in children’s faces or the great feeling of doing for others through volunteering or donations to worthy causes.

In being kind to others, we must also remember to be kind to ourselves. Give yourself permission to say no if you need to. Focus your efforts on what must be done and simplify if possible. Just think, because of the postal strike this year, you do not have to send Christmas cards! Look after yourself by reading a book, taking a walk, getting lots of rest and watching your intake of festive foods and drinks.

Enjoy your in-person and online connections with friends and family. Relish the stories and laughter carefully avoiding the topics which lead to conflict. Cherish the warmth of relationships with family and friends during this time. For me, there is nothing like a good laugh and a hug to bring the joy of the season right into my heart.

I hope you are able to find your joy this year. Joy will not come in a grand production but will be evident in the small things that lead up to and are part of the holiday celebrations. Take a pause and notice those small things. Let that joy spread through you. Once you find your joy it will be easy to spread that joy to those around you.

Have a wonderful, peaceful and joyful holiday,

Janet Horner, Mayor

Mulmur’s 2025 Budget Balances Growth and Fiscal Responsibility

In 2024 Mulmur continued to maintain the second lowest tax rate in Dufferin County. Council has now approved the 2025 budget which faced significant budgetary pressures including:

  • Inflation of 2.53% or $120,302
  • Rising OPP costs
  • A decrease in interest rates
  • A decrease in planning application revenue
  • Rising costs of gravel road maintenance, and
  • An increase in emergency service costs.

In their commitment to continue providing quality services, the Township has also made strategic investments including:

  • Allocating $20,000 to traffic calming measures and road safety
  • Reconstructing Bridge 8 on River Road
  • Installing new rubber flooring at the Honeywood Arena, and
  • Developing a parking lot at Thomson Trail Park

To fund these initiatives and maintain essential services, the Council approved a tax levy increase is $58 per 100,000 of residential assessment. For the average homeowner with a property assessed at $537,000, this would equal an annual tax increase of approximately $311.

The Township remains committed to balancing financial responsibilities with the needs of its residents.
