We Have Lady's Fingers - Well Okra
Okra is sometimes called "Lady's Fingers" due to its long, slender, tube-like shape. Ah, No. They look nothing like any "lady's fingers" that I've seen (thankfully), but they are delicious pickled, roasted, stewed, and fried.
Okra is a fruit though it is eaten as a vegetable, and has a mild taste and a unique texture, with a peach-like fuzz on the outside. Inside the pod are small, edible seeds.
Okra comes in two colors - red and green. Both varieties taste the same, and the red one turns green when cooked.

Several of our growers have okra, so be sure to shop the whole market for some good ole' Lady's Fingers!
A little Okra trivia: Located in Cleveland, MS, Delta State University's official mascot is the "Statesman," however unofficially they are known as the "Fighting Okra." It grew out of humor among students in the 90's about the improbability that anyone would find a "Statesman" particularly frightening. The okra has a fierce expression and is equipped with boxing gloves...frightening indeed. And this is everything you need to know about okra!
For a delicious peach or apple turnover, stop by Jo's Homemade Turnovers booth.
Mrs. Jo and Mr. Ray will be happy to serve you!
August 28th is National Cherry Turnover Day!
National Cherry Turnover Day praises a tasty and sweet hand pie. A turnover is a single serving, and fits nicely in the hand, making them portable.
Listen, we love cherries, and although there are over a 1,000 varieties in the
U. S., - at the Mississippi Farmers Market - we go for apple and peach turnovers! There are 2,500 varieties of apples across the nation and more than 300 varieties of peaches across the U.S., so Mrs. Jo should never run out of turnovers!
