Welcome, 9th Cohort, Class of 2026
Welcome to our 9th Cohort, Class of 2026! It is tradition that each year a tree is created by one of our students. This year, we added thirty-four students from 6 area high schools to sign their name on their thumb pint, joining our ECAC family. Our newest cohort has met many challenges settling into college life, navigating classes, and improving their time management skills.

Students enrolled in Dr. Patti Youngs' English 101 class worked in small groups, creating a story in the fantasy genre. They presented their stories to the style and our staff, who scored them on the genre elements. A prize was awarded to one group in each A.M. and P.M. section. Pictured in the top box are Maya Holden, Arylssa Baumgartner, Wyatt Harmsem, Gavin Meyers, Sarah Skinner, and Alexandra Solis-Sarat. with the prize-winning story about H.H. Holmes. Pictured in the lower box are Aidan Letts, Lillian Lyon, Brian Johnson, Logan Johnson, and Madison Little-Garner with their prize-winning story about Kanye West.

ECAC Students Take on Extra-Curricular Activities.
Our second-year ECAC/LMC students are Seniors and taking full advantage of extra-curricular activities. This Fall, we have many football players, cheerleaders, swimmers, cross-country runners, golfers, band members, and drama/choir performers. They are excelling in many areas and learning how to master time management. Pictured above are some of our Fennville students before their musical performance of "Some Enchanted Evening."

College Application Month, Field Trips, & FAFSA
| |
October is College Application Month. Many colleges waive their application fees during this time, and students are encouraged to visit campuses. This fall, students in the 13th year and 2nd year could visit either Michigan State University or Grand Valley State University. They were presented with information on admissions, housing, and financial aid. They toured the campus, including classrooms, dorm rooms, the bookstore, and the dining hall. Having boots on the ground helps cement the decision on which college to choose. Currently, we have 33 students in the 13th Cohort who have applied to a total of seventeen different colleges in and out of the state.

FAFSA Opens in December
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is being restructured and simplified. The exact date has not yet been announced, other than the month of December. The FAFSA must be completed to attend college and be awarded scholarships at the institution you will be attending. Students and those financially responsible for them will create a FAFSA ID before completing the FAFSA.
We will host a FAFSA workshop later in January/February and help families with its completion. Until then, the MI Department of Treasury offers a webinar, and there are multiple dates to choose from. These are free, but you must be registered. Click on the link below to go to the website to register.

In the 3rd year of the Early College Program, students spend much time together and have a more extended day with multiple college classes. In between classes, some leave and get lunch or run errands, sometimes we have meetings, some stay and eat lunch, and many works on their assignments. They often need a brain break and might have a deck of cards available to help distract and relax!

This month, Lake Michigan College Career Development Coordinator Kathi Szabo presented Handshake to our 13th-year students. What is Handshake? Handshake is a portal on the Lake Michigan College website that not only connects students with jobs but also prepares them for a future career. The portal lists resources, such as a Workplace lookbook, what is appropriate attire to wear during an interview, the art of networking, how to create a 30-second elevator pitch, and for those students who do not have a career pathway chosen, 16 personalities exploring career options. Moreover, it lists career fairs and career center employer events. Any current student or alums can participate.
Students start with creating a profile. Then, they can search for different employers, internships, and job opportunities. One can place filters on their search by location, size of company, full or part-time work, in-person or remote. Also, the more specific information given, the more companies will be generated for review. Furthermore, employers can see your information and contact you for an interview, just like LinkedIn.
Even though Ms. Szabo works in Benton Harbor, students and alums can schedule individual appointments to meet with her in person, via Zoom, or by phone. She can review your Handshake information with you to help with interview skills and writing resumes and cover letters. Ms. Szoba can be reached at 269.927.6596 or by email at kszoba@lakemichigancollege.edu.

School Closing Policy
As cold weather quickly approaches, this is a reminder that if the Allegan Tech Center is closed due to weather, Lake Michigan College classes are canceled. Cancellations are typically posted on local news outlets. The Dean, Mrs. Evy Houser, also sends students a message through Canvas to notify students directly.
Also, a reminder that the college schedule is not in alignment with the Allegan County Tech Center calendar or local school districts. Students are expected to attend all college classes that are in session.

Book Return Date and Policy
All Books rented through Lake Michigan College/Barnes & Noble through the ECAC program must be returned on or before December 15th. After December 15th, it will be the student's responsibility to send books back to LMC. This would require either shipping them back to the bookstore or traveling to the main campus of Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor to return them to the bookstore. Students will be charged the replacement cost for any books not returned.
