On a cold winter evening, Sunday, February 27th, 2022, at 5:30 pm, during our regular evening walk, my 27-year-old son, who was visiting us, told me that he is gay. Even though I wasn’t fully prepared to understand it, I responded like a model parent, rubbing his back and thanking him for sharing such a personal part of his life. I assured him of my full support and acceptance.
In that moment, I felt like my dreams for my only child to have a "traditional life" had ended. Even though I know he can still have a "traditional life" with marriage and children, I couldn’t help but worry about the challenges he might face.
My next thought was about how others would react. Coming out is a lifelong journey for both the individual and their parents. Through my experience, I’ve come to see this as a chance to be an advocate and ally for the LGBTQ community.
I’ve always believed that the universe supports us, guiding us toward paths that reflect our true selves. I am very grateful that my husband and I have raised a responsible son who has the courage to be true to himself and live authentically.
One thing I know for sure is that my love for my son has not changed one bit since that beautiful Sunday evening when he came out and said, "Mom, I’m gay."
Coming out is for both individual and the parents.
