Proposed Traffic Pattern Pilot Program

Keep your house safe while you're away!

Community members often find themselves traveling during the last few weeks of summer. The department would like to remind residents to be diligent and help protect our community by making harder for criminals to identify homes that may be unoccupied. The following is a partial list of situations that may make it apparent that the home is unoccupied:

  • No Cars in Driveway
  • Garbage cans left at street
  • Accumulated newspapers outside residence
  • Packages left in plain view
  • Ground floor windows or doors left open/unlocked
  • Garage doors left open
  • Mail accumulated in mailbox

We urge residents to take advantage of our Dark House Security Check Service. Click here for the form to complete and submit.

As a reminder, effective May 1st, the use of both electric and gas-powered leaf blowers is prohibited in Larchmont.

Lightning Safety Tips!

  • Lightning is one of the MOST UNDERRATED weather hazards. It makes every single thunderstorm a potential killer, whether the storm produces one single bolt or one thousand bolts.
  • Each year in the United States, lightning kills 20-30 people on average and injures 100s more. Tornadoes, hail, and wind gusts get the most attention, but only lightning can strike outside the storm itself. It is the first thunderstorm hazard to arrive and the last to leave.

Where to Go

The safest location during a thunderstorm is inside a large enclosed structure with plumbing and electrical wiring. These include shopping centers, schools, office buildings, and private residences.

If lightning strikes the building, the plumbing and wiring will conduct the electricity more efficiently than a human body. If no buildings are available, then an enclosed metal vehicle such as an automobile, van, or school bus makes a decent alternative.

What to Do

Once inside a sturdy building, stay away from electrical appliances and plumbing fixtures. As an added safety measure, stay in an interior room.

If you are inside a vehicle, roll the windows up and avoid contact with any conducting paths leading to the outside of the vehicle (e.g. radios, CB's, ignition, etc.).

Grilling Safely!

There’s nothing like outdoor grilling. It’s one of the most popular ways to cook food. But, a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. They can be very hot, causing burn injuries. Follow these simple tips and you will be on the way to safe grilling.

Spotlight on your Emergency Services Personnel

Every month, we will be featuring one member from our Police and Fire Departments to help our residents get to know us better.

Meet Firefighter William Jones.

Firefighter Jones served 21 years in the U.S. Army. Soon after graduating from high school in 1989, he enlisted into the military, serving with units worldwide.

In 2012 he began serving the Larchmont community as firefighter. On his off time, he enjoys spending time with his family, boating and playing on a dart league.

Summer Safety from The Town of Mamaroneck/Village of Larchmont Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Stay safe around bodies of water!

The American Red Cross’ water safety suggestions include:

·        Provide close and constant attention to children in or near water.

·        Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone.

·        Designate a “water watcher” whenever in a group setting.

·        Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.

·        Do not rely on the use of water wings, swim rings, inflatable toys or other items designed for water recreation to replace adult supervision.

·        If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers to prevent unsupervised access to the water.

·        Ensure that everyone in the family learns to swim well and what to do in a water emergency.

·        Know how and when to call 9-1-1 – Seconds count!

·        Have appropriate equipment, such as reaching or throwing equipment, a cell phone, life jackets and a first aid kit.

·        Enroll in CPR/First Aid course to learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies.

Whether it be a pool or Long Island Sound, enjoy summer responsibly and don’t let a trip to the hospital spoil your summer fun.

Larchmont VAC crews took to the shores of Larchmont the morning of Saturday, July 27th in support of Swim Across America! Crews staffed multiple ambulances and medical tents to provide care to swimmers, land and water volunteers, and spectators raising money in support of cancer research. The officers of LVAC worked closely with Westchester County Department of Emergency services to develop a communications plan to bring water and land resources together from various police, fire departments, and other first responders. This event is one of the largest public safety events every year in Larchmont and something the members spend months preparing for and looking forward to. We would like to thank Larchmont Police, Larchmont Fire, and the Town of Mamaroneck Fire Department; along with numerous other agencies from throughout Westchester and Nassau County for another great year.
