Dear Residents -

Fat and Sassy. No, I’m not talking about me 😊 but the 27 very happy goats that have been feasting on the overgrown vegetation at the Orangetown Bio-Retention basin in Tappan. Trust me, they are very entertaining to watch. So much so that Channel 12 News ran it as a story. If you missed it, you can watch it here or, better yet, head over to see them this weekend, as they will be around for a few more days. Thanks to Superintendent of Highways Jim Dean for thinking outside the box and saving our employees many weeks (or months) of manual vegetation removal. Better yet, the goats don’t get overtime!

An important reminder that the school district elections are next Tuesday, May 20, 2025, from 7 am to 9 pm. For detailed information about your election, including candidate profiles and proposed budgets, visit your school district website at Pearl River, South Orangetown, Nanuet or Nyack School. Your vote matters, so please be sure to get out and vote.

A new vendor will be at the Pearl River Farmer’s Market tomorrow and, if you like salsa, you will definitely want to check it out. Salsa Wallito, owned by an Orangetown resident, is spicing things up with the bold taste of authentic Mexican salsa that is handcrafted with love and the finest ingredients. So, stop by and try a free sample of one of their five handcrafted flavors (from wild to mild) and support a true local business.

There is so much to do this weekend. There is the 29th Annual Highway Department Open House, the 4th Annual Field of Honor Opening Ceremony, the Live Like Chris Charity Putt-Putt Pub Crawl, the Nyack Famous Street Fair and so much more – so please scroll down and take a look.

Whatever you choose to do, enjoy!

Regards,

The National Seat Belt Campaign runs from

May 19, 2025 through June 1, 2025.

Buckling up is the simplest thing you can do to limit injury or save your life during a crash. We see the results of not wearing a seat belt all the time. We see the injuries and the loss of life which so often could have been prevented if seatbelts are worn.

  • One of the safest choices drivers and passengers can make is to buckle up.
  • Buckle up all the time — for short trips and long trips.
  • The right seat belt fit matters:
  • The shoulder belt should lay flat across the middle of your chest and away from your neck.
  • The lap belt should fit across your hips, not your stomach.
  • Never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm.

Seat belts are the best defense against impaired, aggressive, and distracted drivers. Being buckled up during a crash helps keep you safe and secure inside your vehicle; the seat belt slows you down and spreads crash forces over the strongest parts of your body.

Despite steady increases in observed seat belt use, approximately half of all passenger vehicle deaths are unrestrained.

Help us spread this lifesaving message. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult — needs to remember to buckle up.
