A Note From Pastor Kevin

Dear Friends of Faith,

Our hearts are heavy and broken in the wake of the tragic school shooting at Annunciation Catholic Church and School in south Minneapolis.

What was meant to be a place of learning, friendship and safety has been pierced by violence, and we grieve deeply for the children whose lives were cut short; for those wounded in body and spirit; and for every family, teacher and neighbor whose world has been shattered.

Like the psalmist, we cry out, "How long, O Lord?" For there are no easy words when confronted with such sorrow. Yet even in the valley of the shadows, we cling to the promise that God is with us. In Jesus, we know a Savior who bore grief, injustice and death itself – and who assures us that suffering and evil will not have the last word.

When I heard the news Wednesday on the radio, I felt anger, numbness, confusion and a deep sense of sadness after yet another tragic event. I was reminded by a friend that in these moments, our call as followers of Christ is clear: to grieve with those who grieve, to comfort those who are afraid, to uphold one another in prayer, and to stand together for peace and the safety of every child. God comforts us so that we may comfort others, and so we will surround one another with compassion, hope and the assurance of God's abiding presence.

We ask you to hold the families, students, teachers, first responders and all affected in prayer. And let us also hold fast to the words of the Apostle Paul, that nothing – neither death, nor life, nor things present, nor things to come – will ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

May Christ's light shine in this darkness, bringing peace to the brokenhearted and courage to us all as we walk together in faith, hope and love.

In Christ,

Pastor Kevin Doely

Faith Apparel

We expect our order of Faith apparel will be delivered Friday, Aug. 29, and should be available for pick-up starting Sunday, Aug. 31. If you aren't able to be here Sunday and ordered items, you can pick those up in the office beginning Tuesday, Sept. 2. Wear your new shirts with us on Rally Day, Sept. 7!

Rally Day is Sunday, Sept. 7!

Join us for Rally Day next Sunday, Sept. 7, as we kick off the program year together with one celebration worship service at 10 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch and God's Work, Our Hands service project.

A Faith Kids Open House will be held from 9-9:45 a.m., and families are invited to stop by to meet teachers and check out recently refreshed classroom spaces before Sunday School begins the following week, Sept. 14. SPARK and Confirmation start up Sept. 10 when our Wednesday worship services also resume.

We invite all children to bring their backpacks to worship Sept. 7 for a special blessing during Kids' Time.

Our annual potluck is always so much fun! Faith will provide hot dogs and beverages, and we invite your family to bring a fun side dish or dessert to share.

Across the ELCA, Sept. 7 is recognized as God's Work, Our Hands Sunday, and congregations are invited to serve their neighbor and community. Faith is sending two buses to Every Meal's warehouse in Roseville after the potluck concludes. We would love for you to join us, but we need you to register ASAP. The buses will leave Faith at 12:20 p.m., and we will volunteer together from 1-3 p.m., arriving back at church no later than 3:45 p.m. Anyone ages 8 and up is welcome to register.

We also need more volunteers for the potluck! We encourage you to sign up through the "Needs Hub" in the My Church app by clicking "Connect," "My Groups" and "Our Church." (If no groups show, you may not be signed in to the app! Do so by clicking on the face in the right-hand corner of the screen.) Once in the group, click "Needs" and browse all of our open donation and volunteer "needs," including Rally Day Potluck and volunteers!

You can also use the button below to sign up and volunteer. You will select a position and then be prompted to enter some information. You will receive an email, and you must confirm your willingness to volunteer via email within five minutes! You will click on your own name in the email, and it will take you to a new screen with your serving assignment. There is no need to click anything on this screen, and if you view the public needs sign-up, the slot will have disappeared. This is an alternative way to sign up if you don't have the app. Please contact the Church Office with any questions. We can't wait for Rally Day!

Family Table Meal

Family Table Meal is seeking donations of hygiene products for its monthly event the first Thursday of each month. We are completely out of dish soap, facial tissue, laundry detergent and toothpaste. We only have a few bottles left of shampoo. Bandages, deodorant, hand soap, lotion and shaving cream are items that always go well. Please consider donating! You can leave these products in the marked bins outside of the Church Office before our next meal one week from today on Thursday, Sept. 4.

All are welcome at our free community dinner Sept. 4 from 5-6 p.m. Sloppy joes are on the menu!

Monday Morning Bible Study

Monday Morning Bible Study picks back up Sept. 8 from 9:30-11 a.m. with fellowship and a potluck! The following week, Sept. 15, we begin a series on Adam Hamilton's "The Call," exploring the journeys of Paul, beginning with his dramatic conversion, as he spread the Gospel through modern-day Greece and Turkey. Travel to the early church sites and explore Paul's conversations with the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians and Thessalonians. You are invited to experience faith through Christ's greatest teacher and missionary!

RASCALS

The new RASCALS (Retired, Active, Spirited Community Among Loving Seniors) group has several fun events planned for the fall! First up, join the group at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, for a fast-paced card game – 5 Crowns! Please bring a potluck dish to share.

Volunteers are needed to distribute meals at Faith on Monday afternoons each week. The commitment is occasional Mondays from 12-3 p.m. The position is not strenuous: You receive bags of food from a delivery driver and wait for program participants to arrive and claim their food. Please contact the Connections Coordinator Hannah Haegele at hannahh@faithlutherancr.org if you are interested in joining this group of rotating volunteers!

Tickets are on sale now for the next senior lunch set to take place Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 11 a.m. Before enjoying a meal of garlic thyme roasted pork loin with cranberry shiraz demi glaze, rosemary roasted potatoes, fresh garden salad, a corn muffin with honey butter and apple ginger crisp with cinnamon whipped cream, we'll listen to Gary LaRue sing vintage grooves from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Tickets are $23 per person and can be secured using the button below or by stopping by the table in the Gathering Area between worship services Sept. 14 and Sept. 21. Tickets will also be sold in the Church Office until noon Tuesday, Sept. 23. Join us for a wonderful afternoon of fellowship!

Fall Small Group

The Gospel of John: The Light That No Darkness Shall Overcome

Join us on select Mondays from 6-7:30 p.m. this Fall for a journey through the Gospel of John. As we go through John's unique account of Jesus' life and ministry, we will explore themes relevant to our own time: light in a world of darkness, love in a time of hate, relationships in a culture of individualism, discipleship in the face of distraction. Each week we will watch a video that makes the Scriptures come to life as they visually portray different chapters of John's Gospel. We will also have opportunities to share in a time of fun, fellowship and reflect together in small group conversations. All are welcome, and there is no required book you need to purchase.

Fall Small Group Dates: Sept. 15, Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 20, Nov. 3 and Nov. 17.

If you are interested in attending any or all of the sessions, please register by clicking the button below.

New Vertical Garden at Faith

Cambry Klemm, who will be confirmed at Faith this fall, has graciously created vertical garden beds for the Nourish Hope Garden as part of her Eagle Scout project! This was no small endeavor: Cambry planned and coordinated the project, designed the beds, raised funds for materials, recruited a build team and installed the finished beds. We are so lucky to have these beautiful and functional additions to our church garden that will benefit the community for many years to come. Please join us in celebrating Cambry for her leadership, vision, hard work and dedication to serving the community!
