A New Hawk Flies In
Suzanne Hawk of FirstService Residential is the new Sincuidados community manager. She is taking over for Angela Howard, who received a promotion to manage a different community. Suzanne shared the following with The Sincuidados Scoop.

What led you to get into this type of work?
I enjoyed a 35-year career in hospitality – specifically as Catering Director and Food & Beverage Director for Hyatt Hotels, Troon Golf, Desert Mountain, among others.
I loved every minute of it but a few years ago recognized that the demands of 70 hours a week no longer fit my lifestyle. While with Troon, I got to know the community managers of the various clubs, and it was with their urging that I looked into this business. It’s such a great fit for me. All the community and relationships of the country club business without the added drama of food and beverage. I am grateful every day that I took a chance and changed careers at this point in my life.

Tell us about your experience working with communities and what you enjoy most about the work.
“Once in hospitality – always in hospitality” they say! I enjoy the service to the community and getting to know the homeowners. I am a fixer at heart so conquering the issues that come up and getting involved in the projects really appeals to me. As a goal oriented individual, I get a lot of satisfaction from working through the process toward resolution and making things better along the way. My experience thus far has been very rewarding. I came in with no HOA experience whatsoever and have learned much along the way. I am fortunate that FirstService supports the educational side so as I move through the certifications for this industry, I become better and better at giving the kind of educated and responsive service you deserve.
Share with us something about you, your family and what you like to do for fun.
I was born into a large family in Wisconsin but grew up and went to college in Colorado. (Go Buffalos!) I have been in Arizona since 1985. My husband, Todd, and I share a combined family of six children. I brought one girl while he brought five boys. They range from 16 to 30 years old. It has been a wild and exciting ride – holidays are loud, crazy and filled with activity and we wouldn’t change a thing. Our daughter is a trauma physician doing her residency at USCLAC in Los Angeles and we have sons in high school, college (2), Naval Officer and in the finance world. “Fun” is always family time and entertaining, but when we get away we enjoy wine country and any beach. We have one 110-pound lap dog named Harlee. She’s a Bernese Mountain dog.

What is the most interesting or unusual situation you faced while working with a community?
This job is different every day. I have lots of stories! A couple years ago one of my communities experienced some damage from a monsoon – a major downpour dumping a few inches of water in a short amount of time. They are located in the foothills of a mountainous area with the back walls of the lots facing the mountain side. The water came in such volume in such a short period of time that it created a wall of water coming down the mountain and leveled the walls of 16 lots. It filled everyone’s pools, hot tubs, etc with mud and debris. What a mess … indescribable. It took months of clean up removing all the sludge, rock and cactus from the lots and working with the city and architects to re-route the water should that happen again. A year later things are back to almost normal. It was quite the learning experience for us all!

What is the most important thing homeowners should know about a community manager?
A community manager must wear many hats. The questions and situations we juggle every day can range from neighbor disputes and parking violations to asphalt replacement and architectural review. We are not experts in every area but I can promise you this: If I do not know the answer or process to address the issues and questions – I will find out. We genuinely want to help and be great stewards in managing the various entities that comprise your community. Every community is also very different. It may take a short while to get to know what the needs and wants of Sincuidados are - but that is the fun of it all!

Is there anything you would like to add that we didn't ask about?
The best way to communicate with me is via email. I find myself either on the phone or in front of a board member, vendor or homeowner much of the day and can’t answer the calls immediately when they come in. I promise to respond within 24 hours. If it is urgent, please utilize the FirstService call center so that you get immediate assistance and they will get hold of me. I would be remiss if I did not say that Angela is leaving some big shoes to fill. She is the best which is why she has recently been promoted. She is highly regarded in the industry and has achieved all of her CAI certifications. I sit next to her in the office and have learned much about this business and about your community from her. Angela is very committed to standing beside me as I get to know you and Sincuidados. I intend to utilize her knowledge of your beautiful community as much as is needed so please know – she isn’t gone. She will be working with me in the background to ensure that no ball gets dropped and that the transition is as seamless as possible. I know you join me in wishing her only the best in her new endeavor.

Paint It Yellow
The City of Scottsdale last month repainted the approximately 60 fire hydrants in Sincuidados. In the past, the community paid a company to paint the hydrants. However, the city is taking on the responsibility, saving Sincuidados several thousand dollars.
Cutting Crew
SDL Sincuidados Account Manager Enrique Olea
Sincuidados hired a new landscaping company named Service Direct Landscape (SDL). The company will visit Mondays, work in common areas and focus on different sections of the community each week. SDL already removed dead trees along Pima Road and will check irrigation in common areas. If you have questions about SDL, please contact Community Manager Suzanne Hawk or HOA Board Secretary and Landscaping Committee Chairperson Sue Van Leer.
Reminder - Send in pet contest photos by Nov. 30.
Remember - Scoop the poop when walking dogs.
Please - Slow your roll when driving in Sincuidados.
Crystal Ball
For quarantine Halloween, Loren Yaskin in Sincuidados included trick-or-treating throughout the home, a scavenger hunt, a fortune telling reading with crystal ball and cards and a fun "guess what disgusting item you just blindly felt" activity.
