Shabbat Service November 13

Join us for our Shabbat Service on Friday, November 13, at 7:30 pm. Doors open at 7:00. Rabbi Menachem Cohen and Cantorial Soloist Eli Newell will lead us in soothing and meaningful prayer as we welcome Shabbat and leave our troubles of the week at the door.

The service will be followed by an oneg. We'll recite our blessings over the wine and bread, and then we'll do some serious shmoozing and noshing.

At Broadway United Methodist Church, 3338 N. Broadway in Chicago. The 36 Broadway bus stops right in front of the church. There is also metered street parking.

TWO NEW
AFFILIATION GROUPS

AGING WISELY

The 4 Worlds approach to Wise Aging guides us through the physical, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual dimensions of growing older with dignity, curiosity, and depth. It weaves together caring for the body, tending relationships, making meaning from life experience, and cultivating the soul’s wisdom — inviting us to see aging not as decline but as a rich spiritual curriculum. Aging becomes a journey of “caring for the aging body with dignity” and “moving from decline‑narratives to growth‑narratives,” ultimately supporting the shift from older adult to elder‑sage. If this resonates, you’re warmly invited to an initial planning session where we’ll explore how to shape this program together and help you discern whether this path feels right for you.

If you'd like to attend the Wise Aging affiliation group email Ascher Levy, ascher1@ameritech.net.

Testimonials

I would like to encourage many of you to join Ascher Levy's new aging class that will start soon. I found the first class, which had been meeting for a year and a half, to be inspiring and informative. Ascher guided the group skillfully through the concepts of aging, and along with the readings, helped us confront the inevitable. I feel much more comfortable with this portion of my life than I did a year and a half ago. I highly recommend it.

--Lynn Preis

Echoing Lynn’s endorsement, I wanted to share how meaningful my eighteen month participation in our Aging to Saging group has been. Through readings, reflection, and discussions, we’ve learned to accept our physical health in the third portion of our life, to develop fulfilling perspectives on our past, present, and future, to evolve our sense of what we can give back, and to incorporate it all in our spiritualness. I encourage all seniors to join Ascher’s continuing group!!

--Roberta Cohen

HEART-PRACTICE HAVURAH

Heart‑Practice Havurah is a warm, exploratory space for anyone seeking a Jewish spiritual practice that feels authentic, nourishing, and sustainable. Together, we’ll meet in a supportive group, experience a rotating set of heart-centered practices, reflect on what they awaken in us, and explore how each one might become part of our own spiritual toolkit. If you’re curious whether this kind of gentle, soulful practice community is right for you, you’re invited to join an initial planning session where we’ll shape the first season of gatherings and help you sense whether this Havurah feels like home.

Our next Rosh Chodesh Affiliation Group meeting will take place via Zoom on Sunday, November 8, at 3:00 pm. It will be close to the beginning of the month of Kislev, the month when the flooding of Noah's Ark ends and Hanukkah arrives. Kislev is a very dark month when the days are short.

December 13 Book Club

Our next Book Club meeting will be Sunday, December 13, at 10:30 am in the Hollywood Park home of Joan Minsky. Call it Sleep by Henry Roth tells the story of a young Jewish boy, part of an immigrant family, who comes of age in the slums of New York City on the Lower East Side. This story captures the harshness of poverty and family dynamics. Nowadays considered a masterpiece, this Depression-era novel was forgotten and rediscovered decades later.

RSVP to Joan Minsky, minsky@aol.com, for more information.

Sukkot 2026/5787

Al Goldberg explains the etrog and lulav traditions, and then recites the welcoming prayers for the Ushpizim in his Sukkah.

Feeding the Needy

In these difficult times, as we're trying to normalize after a government shut-down when SNAP benefits were paused, there is a way we can help the needy. Broadway United Methodist Church has some shelves at the front door that serve as a food pantry. Non perishable items that are left on the shelf will be of great help to the community.

Suggested items: canned meat or other protein items (tuna, salmon, chicken), crackers, peanut butter, canned soups and stews, canned fruits and vegetables, canned beans, pasta, rice, olive oil or Canola oil, powdered milk, spices (salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion salt, oregano, etc.), granola bars, applesauce, nuts, instant mashed potatoes.

Items to Skip: items that have to be refrigerated, items with glass packaging, items that need can openers or other special equipment to open (pop-top cans are the best!), items that require too many extra ingredients, items that are expired, items that are homemade or have already been opened.

================================

All services and events marked "at Makom" or unless otherwise marked are held at Broadway United Methodist Church, 3338 N. Broadway, Chicago.

Parking in the west lot can ONLY be accessed from Buckingham Place. It has limited space. DO NOT use the lot north of the church to avoid a ticket and/or being towed. There is also metered street parking. SpotHero can be a useful tool in this area. The Broadway #36 bus stops at the front door.

If you are sending dues or donations please use our PO BOX address: PO Box 10015, Chicago, IL 60610-0015.
