A new year means a new assessment year. January 1 is the date all properties are valued for property tax purposes, making it an important date for property owners.
As 2027 approaches, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Did you buy a new home or move this year?
To qualify for a Homestead Exemption for 2027, you must own the property and make it your permanent residence as of January 1. Remember, your Homestead Exemption does not automatically transfer when you move. You must file a new application for your new residence.
Has anything changed that could affect your exemption?
If you already receive a Homestead or other property tax exemption, let us know about changes that could affect your eligibility, such as a change in ownership or how the property is used.
Planning to apply for Agricultural Classification?
Land must be used primarily for bona fide agricultural purposes as of January 1 to qualify for Agricultural Classification. Applications for 2027 are due by March 1.
Do you own a business?
Tangible Personal Property is assessed as of January 1 each year. Business owners should review their ownership, location and property information as they prepare for the annual Tangible Personal Property filing period. Returns are due April 1.
Has your property changed?
New construction, additions, demolitions and other changes to a property may affect its assessment. Property is valued based on its status as of January 1.
