"Welcome Back" Picnic

Bring Your Own Sack Lunch

Sat., Sep. 6, 11:00am-1:00pm

Northend Riverside Park

Big Rapids

Our annual "Welcome Back" picnic after the summer hiatus will be Saturday, September 6, at Northend Riverside Park from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. After reconnecting over lunch, there will a business meeting to talk through plans for the coming year. Kathi Parker and Débora Borba met to brainstorm program possibilities, and the Board also met earlier this month, so we have lots of ideas to discuss with the full branch.

AAUW Big Rapids Picnic and September 14 2024 meeting

2024 picnic kicking off the FY25 AAUW year

The last newsletter included a poll asking members about their preferences for lunch. The votes were fairly evenly split between the two suggested restaurants and a potluck, so the board decided that we would ask everyone to bring their own lunch, either one they pack themselves or a meal picked up from the restaurant of their choice. Jennifer Cochran has graciously offered to bring a plate of cookies to share. Thank you, Jennifer!

AAUW to Sponsor

Big Rapids City Commission Candidate Forum

AAUW will once again sponsor the Big Rapids City Commission Candidate Forum, which will be held Wednesday, September 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the City Commission room in City Hall and livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person. There are three candidates running for two seats. Two are the incumbents Karen Simmon and David Rhodes, and the third is Dan Kirwin, who was the contracted assessor for the city for two years. The mayor is also up for re-election this year and is running unopposed. Susan H. Grant has agreed to reprise her role as forum moderator, and Jennifer Cochran and Julie Alexander will compile questions for Susan to ask the candidates. Email Jennifer by Friday, September 6 if you have questions you would like the candidates to answer.

While we do encourage all members to attend, we are not considering this event to be a regular branch meeting or program since many of us do not live in the city limits. This is a great service for us to provide to the community, and it's a good publicity for our branch. Thank you very much to Julie, Susan, and Jennifer for agreeing to participate in organizing the event!

Some of our members have tremendous things to celebrate!

  • Julie Alexander and Débora Borba have both started new jobs. Hurrah!
  • Sarah Lucas is now Dr. Sarah after finishing her PhD program at Purdue University. Woot-woot!

We'll ask them for all the details at the picnic. We apologize if we missed any milestones and accomplishments that other members experienced over the summer. Please let us know if we missed your big news!

AAUW's Deputy Director of Advancement Tremayne Parquet emailed this big news on Thursday:

"I’m delighted to share that the Big Rapids (MI) Branch has earned a Public Policy & Advocacy, Programming, and Communications & External Relations Star in the Five Star Program for FY25! This achievement reflects your branch’s commitment to advancing gender equity and aligning your programs, advocacy, and sustainability efforts with AAUW’s strategic priorities."

Congratulations to the whole branch for achieving three stars!
