Stamping out the “R Word”
Whitman Hanson High School

From March 20th–24th, the Student Council and Best Buddies Club of Whitman-Hanson High School hosted an Inclusion Week. For the activity on March 23rd, students and staff had the opportunity to help stamp out the “R Word” at Whitman-Hanson and pledge to be inclusive in all that they do.
Hundreds of students and staff dipped their hands in paint and helped “stamp” out that word. The next part of their plan is to display the poster in one of the school’s lobbies to serve as a reminder that Whitman-Hanson is a place of acceptance and inclusion. Wonderful job, everyone. Keep up the good work!

Historical Tidbit:
Memorial Bridge and Arch
The Abolitionist movement in Massachusetts dates back to the famous Quock Walker case in 1781, marking the abolition of slavery in the state. In the decades that followed, the state had an active presence as an abolitionist force, and Whitman was no exception.

Before 1875, Whitman was the southern part of now neighboring town Abington. Located at the entrance to Abingtons Island Grove Park lies the Memorial Bridge and Arch, donated back in 1909 dedicated on June 10, 1912. The Grove, before the war, had been a popular meeting place for the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society. William Lloyd Garrison, Wendell Phillips, Abby Kelley Foster, and Lucy Stone were among the many prominent reformers who spoke here. Capt. Moses Arnold, a veteran of the 12th Massachusetts Infantry from North Abington, donated a smaller structure in 1909 to commemorate the abolitionist meetings at Island Grove. Shortly after, he led the effort to create the Memorial Bridge and Arch.

Whitman Middle School Project

At their Board of Directors meeting on April 14, 2021, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) invited the Whitman-Hanson Regional School District into a Feasibility Study for the Whitman Middle School. This was to understand the best solution for the physical and educational deficiencies of the school. On January 24, 2023, the WMS Building Committee voted to select the preferred building solution to bring forward into Schematic Design.

The preferred solution was for a 3-Story New Construction for grades 5-8 with an auditorium. On February 28, the WMSBC voted to submit the design to the MSBA. The Committee is now waiting for approval.

For more information, visit the WMS Project website.
An Evening of Music for Devin Dondero
On March 2, 2023, Whitman-Hanson students, faculty, and alumni came together to show support for retired faculty member, Devin Dondero, during his fight against cancer. This event was hosted by Brian Rowe and Gregory Daigle, music teachers from Whitman-Hanson. There were a variety of performances, including classmates, teachers, and student bands! Two Massachusetts State Representatives for Whitman, Alyson Sullivan-Almedia and Michael Brady, also delivered a citation from the House of Representatives to Devin Dondero in recognition of his 30+ years of service to the district.
The night concluded with incredibly touching messages for Mr. Dondero, truly honoring the work he’s done over the years. To watch this fantastic evening unfold, watch the episode of “Around Town” from WHCA9TV.

You are the center of the universe AND you are a speck of dust.
This old Hebrew teaching about our ego speaks to me today. Rabbi Simcha Bunim, a great Polish Hasidic master at the turn of the 19th century, taught: “Everyone must have two pockets, with a note in each pocket, so that he or she can reach into one or the other, depending on the need.”

Every single day, we should feel worthy, loved, appreciated. If we don’t, we “should reach into one pocket, and, there, find the words: ‘Bishvili nivra ha-olam’ The world was created for me." (BT Sanhedrin 37B). I will say it now to you, dear reader; you are worthy, loved, appreciated. Take care of yourself, eat right, exercise. Today, your smiling face is more important than ever.

And also, when we feel full of ourselves, unjustly put out: “one should reach into the other pocket, and find the words: ‘V’anochi afar v’efer’ I am but dust and ashes." (Gen. 18:27).
That way we carry both at once: As tiny as an ant and at the same time knowing how important we are. Today and always, each of us has an important role to play in keeping our community strong. Making eye contact and sharing joy are important. Call each other, write notes, create public art. The need continues.
Our impact is huge. Ants can carry up to 40 x their weight, we are a speck, but we are mighty.
~ Jacquie
