This year’s Work Zone Awareness Week will take place April 15-19 with the returning theme of "Work With Us." A statewide news conference, in conjunction with AAA Missouri, will take place on the morning of Tuesday, April 16 to promote the kickoff of Work Zone Awareness Week. April 16 is also Distracted Driving Day. The event will be livestreamed on MoDOT's Facebook page.
Work zone safety continues to be a concern on Missouri roadways. In 2023, 35 people were killed in work zone crashes, and MoDOT protective vehicles were struck 63 times while protecting crews performing road work. That’s nearly double the number of protective vehicle strikes in 2022. Lack of seat belt use, speeding and distracted driving are once again key contributors to work zone crashes and fatalities.
In 2023:
- 45% of vehicle occupant fatalities in work zones weren't wearing seat belts.
- Distracted driving contributed to 588 work zone crashes and five fatalities.
- 10% of work zone crashes in Missouri involved a speeding driver.
This year’s public service announcement video focuses on slowing down and paying attention in work zones. Remember, you play a role in work zone safety. Learn more.
