NPR Planning for special coverage of Supreme Court, Congressional hearings in June
|
NPR is watching two specific news stories in the coming weeks with an eye toward providing live special coverage:
- The Supreme Court is expected to announce a ruling in the abortion case known as Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization before the end of June. A draft opinion in this case was leaked, indicating that the ruling is likely to overturn Roe v. Wade.
- The House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol is planning to hold eight hearings sometime in June, still to be determined.
Stay tuned for special coverage of these events, and any other format-breaking news.

Introducing Sound Beat, a new segment heard on KGOU
|
With the ending of Pulse of the Planet, the short segment heard at 5:40 a.m. and 9:58 p.m. on KGOU, we're adding some new short elements to the programming lineup starting June 6.
Early morning listeners have been hearing Asian View weekdays at 5 a.m. for several months now, a five-minute newscast produced in Japan for the Asian diaspora around the world. KGOU will be adding a second two-minute Asian View newscast at about 5:40 weekday mornings.
And KGOU is adding a brand new segment: Sound Beat is a 90-second feature from one of the largest recorded sound archives in the U.S. Every weeknight at 9:58 p.m., we'll hear a clip from the archive, maybe an early music recording or spoken words, and get the back story from host Brett Barry.

Tiny Desk Contest 2022 has a winner!
|
From Boston, Alisa Amador is a singer-songwriter with a powerful voice whose music explores jazz, funk and folk styles, all rooted in the spirit of the Latin music she grew up with. She impressed NPR's Tiny Desk Contest judges with her winning performance of her original song, "Milonga accidental," which she calls "an ode to in-between-ness – to having several identities at once, to feeling split between cultures and languages."
As the winner of the 2022 Contest, Amador will play the tiny desk of NPR's Bob Boilen, and embark on a nationwide mini-tour this summer. Thousands of talented musicians from all 50 states entered, including a few from Oklahoma. There's always next year -- for Amador, the fifth time was the charm!
