Weed Warriors Breakthrough
Redhill Elementary's NEW Creekside Classroom
|
|
Three years ago, a teacher at Red Hill Elementary School approached Principal Eric Olsen with an idea to take advantage of the school’s outdoor environment, which includes a small creek on the west side of the school. In order to take advantage of the space and bring education to a new environment, the school created what it’s calling the Creekside Classroom.
“We live in a beautiful area. The kids should be exposed to it so they can help protect it,” Olsen said. Plus, as an added benefit, “fresh air is good for the kids.”
However, until recently, the creek and its classroom was inaccessible and overburdened with noxious weeds. Now, the river now has an ADA accessible path and a dedicated classroom area. Plus, thanks in large part to a partnership with the Weed Warriors of Eagle River Valley as well as the students themselves; the area has new ecological value and no noxious weeds.

Welcome Torrey Davis, EVLT's New Land Steward
|
|
Having grown up on the plains of southeastern Colorado, Torrey’s love of the state has deep roots, and she has used that passion to fuel her work in conservation over the years. She studied ecology and evolutionary biology at CU Boulder, where she interned with The Nature Conservancy and was involved in research. She later went on to work in policy, education, and restoration with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and other land trusts in Colorado. When not working to protect land, she loves hiking, climbing mountains, reading, and wandering and exploring. She hopes to genuinely connect with the people of Eagle Valley and help further conservation in the state, and world, that she loves.

...Did you know?
More and more people are donating stocks and mutual funds to the nonprofits they care about.
This offers donors far more tax benefits than giving a cash donation, and many people are surprised by how easy it is to do.
