Heads Up, Drivers! School Is Back, Kids Are Out, Be Bus Smart.
The long days of summer are winding down, and a new school year is just around the corner. For students in Delta, it means fresh starts, new lessons, and reconnecting with friends. For every driver on our roads, it's a critical reminder: it's time to adjust our driving habits and prioritize safety for our youngest community members.
The return to school brings increased pedestrian and bicycle traffic, especially in neighborhoods and around school zones. Most importantly, it signals the return of our familiar yellow school buses, which provide the safest way for children to get to and from school. With these large vehicles back on their routes, every driver has a vital role to play in ensuring the safety of our most vulnerable road users.
School Bus Safety: A Shared Responsibility
School buses are easily identifiable, equipped with flashing lights, and designed with safety in mind. However, their effectiveness hinges on the cooperation of all drivers. When you see a school bus, be alert and ready to react.
Here's what you need to know about stopping for a school bus:
- Flashing Yellow Lights: These lights indicate the bus is preparing to stop to load or unload children. Slow down and be prepared to stop.
- Flashing Red Lights and Extended Stop Arm: This is the universal signal to stop. When a school bus activates its flashing red lights and extends its stop arm, you MUST stop. This applies to traffic traveling in both directions on undivided roadways. The only exception is on a divided highway with a median or physical barrier; in such cases, only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop.
Why is this so crucial? Children can be unpredictable. They might dart into the street, drop something, or simply not be paying attention to traffic. The flashing red lights and stop arm create a safety zone around the bus, allowing children to cross the street safely. Your patience and adherence to the law can prevent a tragedy.
Penalties for Failing to Stop
Colorado law takes school bus safety very seriously, and the penalties for failing to stop for a stopped school bus with flashing red lights are significant:
- First Offense: Failing to stop for a stopped school bus displaying flashing red lights is a Class 2 Misdemeanor Traffic Offense. This is punishable by a fine ranging from $150.00 to $300.00 and can include 10 days up to 90 days in jail.
- Second or Subsequent Offense: If an individual is found guilty of this offense two or more times within five years, it escalates to a Class 1 Misdemeanor Traffic Offense. This carries a more severe penalty, including a fine between $300.00 and $1,000.00 and 10 days up to a year in jail.
These penalties are in place for a reason: to deter dangerous driving behaviors and protect our children. It's not just about a fine or jail time; it's about the potential for devastating consequences if a child is injured or killed.
