Reimagining The Icons

The Ineos Grenadier can be described as a 'Reimagined' Land Rover Defender.  With many iconic combustion-engined vehicles going out of production, we can expect more 'new' classic cars being brought to market.

The next product life cycle - usually 5-8 years - may be the last opportunity to buy an enthusiast combustion engined machine - at least they way we know them. With only a few exceptions (Lamborghini, Ferrari), manufacturers are stopping development on combustion engines and the platforms that go with them.

Canada's share of the global vehicle market is well under 1%, so there is little we can do about it. With most of the country thinly populated - making an electric infrastructure uneconomic and therefor electric-only transport unfeasible - many Canadians will likely have fewer buying options. Prarie customers (and dealers) may look at smaller production alternatives that spring up to fill the void.

Thankfully, there are lots of wealthy industrialists that want to build their own vehicle and see the opportunities. This is an unimaginably complex and expensive proposition, but it can be done - as Mate Rimac, Horacio Zonda, Christian Koenigsegg and Alois Ruf have demonstrated. If you have any doubt how difficult global certification of an automobile is, check out Rimac's latest video below...

It helps to be a Billionaire first. The owner of the petrochemical giant Ineos, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, likes Land Rover Defenders (a lot).  He decided to make his own version and name it after the Pub where his version was sketched out on a napkin. The difference with this 'Reimagined' Defender is that it will be made in reasonable quantities - tens of thousands instead of tens or hundreds - so the price should be reasonable. Ineos is quoting a starting price of 50,000 GBP. Even if the one that you might want to buy is double that, it is still far less than the ultra-low production bespoke vehicles from ICON or Arkonic, which are several hundreds of thousands.

When you are going to the trouble of creating a completely new vehicle and production facility, there is the freedom to update the design. There is a fine line between making the vehicle work better, and destroying the character that made it iconic in the first place. But most people would like a car to start up and idle smoothly, have good A/C and ventilation, and have at least some concessions to safety.

Also, these companies are driven by one person with a clear vision - the recipe that always makes for the best vehicles. At some point combustion engined vehicles will become a hobby, but there could be a number on 'new' classics for the enthusiast who wants new vehicle capability and reliability.

1967 Citroen DS21 For Sale in Florida

Auction ending Sun, July 24th @ 1pm

I like cars that made a huge impact when they were introduced, and there probably isn't another car that created as much of as stir as 'the Goddess' from Citroen.  They went on to make nearly 1.5M of them from 1955 to 1975, and without question it has its place as one of the most influential automobiles ever created.  Good ones are now with the cost of restoration which is onlhy fitting.

1964 Imperial Crown Coupe For Sale In Calgary

Bid to $13k on July 19th

Funny, the far less desirable 1975 Imperial sedan was sold at $22k from the same seller a few weeks ago.  The buyers were just not 'in the room' as they say.  I wish it was no reserve like the other one - I've always wanted one of these.
