Gift of Health Guyana Serves 500 Patients

“I was advised that I would need [cataract] surgery sooner rather than later, and so that was an important piece of information.”

Shaiza from the University of Maryland interviews a patient who came in for information about eyecare.

Patients came to the clinics in Georgetown and Linden check their blood pressure and sugar levels and to seek advice on individual medical concerns.

“[I came] here to have my blood pressure check - my blood pressure and my blood count. And I’m grateful because, you never know…. Thank you very much.”

“The trip was a great success with over 500 patients seen in only 3 days by 26 volunteers. We were able to treat several patients with conditions they were fully unaware of, as well as those who were unable to afford treatment elsewhere. Seeing firsthand how people are unaware of serious medical issues due to lack of education and resources, can’t afford to sacrifice time off work for healthcare due to poor wages, or can’t afford to get proper medications that they know they need, gives a much better idea of the struggles people face. The hands-on patient care experience was invaluable for a future physician who will work with patients of different backgrounds, by showing how to take into account all aspects of the patient beyond just their maladies. This trip is hopefully the first of many more Gift of Health trips as Humanity First continues to increase its presence in Guyana.”

Student leader Sam Rosenberg reflects on learning and serving in Guyana.

University of Maryland students completed a Gift of Health medical mission trip to Guyana earlier this month. We appreciate the dedication of the HF Guyana team and HFUSA representatives Fahd, Jameel, and Mazhar, to host the trip. And of course, the students themselves for their hard work to improve patient health!

Qurbani ensures a nourishing meal

Qurbani service makes sure that people can eat well to sustain themselves and their families at the important Eid-ul-Adha holiday.

“The pangs of hunger are felt very sharply every day in far too many cities, villages, and communities. For people who follow Islam, as you plan to celebrate the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, it is equally important to make sure that your neighbor has enough to eat.

Humanity First USA Qurbani service delivers much-needed nutrition so that people have enough to eat as they gather with their families for their Eid celebration. Thank you for helping us alleviate hunger, and more importantly helping someone celebrate the Eid with a good meal.” ~Munum Naeem, HFUSA Chairman & Executive Director
