Greetings!,
May is Small Business Month. By eating at neighborhood restaurants, shopping at our local retailers, and hiring local service providers, we’re voting with our wallets for a stronger, more resilient local economy. We’re also sending a clear message to our small business owners: your hard work matters, and we value what you bring to our island.
So as we mark Small Business Month, I hope you discover a new local business, say “thank you” to the ones you already love, and share their stories with others. Supporting small businesses isn’t just a feel‑good campaign - it’s one of the most practical, convincing ways we can invest in our island’s future.
On Sunday, April 26th, the Guam Chamber of Commerce proudly commemorated 102 years of serving the business community. I would like to personally extend my sincere gratitude to each of our members for your continued support, engagement, and commitment. Your involvement has been essential to the Chamber's growth and success. We usually celebrate the Chamber's Anniversary on the first Saturday in May; however, we made the decision earlier this week to reschedule the celebration to Saturday, September 12th. More details can be found as you scroll through the newsletter. I look forward to celebrating this special milestone with you later this year.
We send a huge Si Yu'os Ma'ase to Dr. Roseann M. Jones, Professor of Economics and UOG SBPA Dean, who was our guest speaker at our monthly general membership meeting held last Wednesday. She gave an insightful presentation. If you missed it, you can click on links below to view her presentation and watch a recording of the event.
We continue to plan activities and opportunities for you to engage with the membership, so be sure to keep your eyes locked on your email inbox for more to come. Our advocacy efforts are always ongoing. If you have additional issues top of mind that you would like to see the Chamber address, please let us know with a call or an email message. In the meantime, scroll for current updates below.
Have a restful weekend, and I look forward to seeing you at a Chamber meeting again soon.
Onward together,
Catherine Castro
President

How to Keep America's Health System a Competitive Asset
Top health care leaders, policymakers, and innovators gathered on Thursday for the U.S. Chamber's 2026 Health Summit: America's Health Advantage.
‌
- From consumer-centered care to strengthening employer-provided coverage and accelerating innovation, conversations highlighted the policies and partnerships needed to improve access, affordability, and outcomes.
Why it matters: America's health system is a competitive asset. The policies discussed affect how employers cover their workforces, how fast new treatments reach patients, and whether families can access affordable, high-quality care.
‌
Be smart: "Health care isn't partisan," said Chris Klomp with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. "Both sides agree on 95% of what needs to be done."
‌
Key takeaways:
-
Innovation is America's superpower. "The state of innovation in this country is very strong," said AmirAli Talasaz, Co-CEO of Guardant Health, pointing to AI, genomics, and advanced imaging. "The future could be very bright for patients."
-
Put consumers in the driver's seat. Chobani founder and CEO Hamdi Ulukaya reminded the room that "health starts from what you put into your body.” Other Summit speakers pushed for policies that give individuals more choice and control. "You'll see a lot of change if you put more power in the hands of the individual consumer," said Oscar Health's SVP and Chief Growth Officer Louis DeStefano.
-
Workforce is infrastructure. "Protecting your health care workforce is protecting the patient," said Dr. Jacqueline Walters ("Dr. Jackie"), OB-GYN and the star of Bravo TV’s Married to Medicine.
What we’re doing: Today, with leaders from business, policy, and beyond, the U.S. Chamber officially launched its Health Policy Center, cementing the business community’s role in shaping the future of health care. The Center advocates for policies that empower innovation and save lives. WATCH
