Neighbors,

Local government is at its best when it connects communities and improves the quality of life for our neighbors. Two (of many!) projects in Hunter Mill District – one finished and one underway – are worth highlighting:

Sugarland Run Bridge

The Park Authority recently opened the new pedestrian bridge in the section of Sugarland Run Stream Valley Park between Heather Down Drive and Eddyspark Drive. It replaces a bridge that was removed 15 years ago and reconnects the neighborhood along Heather Down Drive with the Sugarland Run Stream Valley Trail. In more tangible terms, a community member shared the photo of her children using the bridge on the first day of school. The bridge cost approximately $740,000 and was funded in large part by the voter-approved 2020 Park Bond Referendum, with some additional General Fund monies provided in 2021 by the Board of Supervisors.

Lake Fairfax Outdoor Inline Skate Rink

Yesterday I attended the groundbreaking for a new inline skate rink at Lake Fairfax with Jai Cole, Director of the Park Authority and Bill Bouie, Hunter Mill District board member for the Park Authority. The project, constructed through a partnership with the Washington Capitals, will be adjacent to the existing skate park. Through the partnership, the Park Authority will be responsible for the site preparation and supporting infrastructure. The Capitals will donate the inline skating rink via a turnkey installation on the prepared site. The rink is expected to be completed by next spring. The total estimated cost is $1.9 million and is funded through the same 2020 Park Bond Referendum as the Sugarland Run Bridge.

There are several more great projects underway throughout Hunter Mill District and I will keep you updated!

Regards,

Walter

  • Contact the Permit Application Center via email or by calling 703-222-0801.
  • Check for complaints filed against contractors in the county’s consumer complaints database.

Possible Signs of a Scam or Unlicensed Contractor:

  • Says the permit should be issued to the homeowner.

COVID Update from Fairfax County Health Department

The county's Health Department website has been updated to share information on an emerging COVID-19 variant, EG.5, that accounted for roughly 17 percent of cases nationwide last week. There is no evidence that the EG.5 variant increases disease severity compared to other recent variants, and our local hospital admission level remains low. The Health Department will post updated information on vaccine availability and recommendations in the weeks ahead as staff receive more information.
