Plan Your Arts Weekend: Thursday thru Sunday

It's here – Houston's unofficial launch of its Fall Art Season, and man, is it seriously packed – SO packed that I couldn't include at least 10 other events that I wanted to list (but they are on my online calendar so look them up!). If you attend every event posted below, you deserve a medal!

Let me know which ones you plan to attend. For me and my "art crew," I am creating a timed driving map to optimize our gallery hopping, but even with that, we may only be able to see 4 or 5 events a night (and that's a lot). So, I am already making plans to see some shows during their public hours, outside of the opening receptions! How about you?

🎨 ART EVENT “Opening Night of The TUNNEL by Big Art" 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM at Discovery Green (1500 McKinney St., Houston 77010). On view nightly thru October 6, 2024, enjoy this journey to a bright future with this immersive art experience. 

🎨 ART EVENT "Artists on Site: Studio Tour with Claire Elestwani and Chayse Sampy" 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Asia Society Texas Center (370 Southmore Blvd., Houston 77004). The artists share their art practice and processes in the galleries.

🎨 ART EVENT "Mid Main First Thursday Block Party” 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at Mid Main Houston (3550 Main St., Houston 77002). Eat, shop and rock for a good cause (this month, for CAMH). Enjoy drink specials, live music, deejays, and discounts at nearby businesses.

🎨 GRAND OPENING PARTY 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at Red Bird Press (708 Telephone Rd., Ste. C, Houston 77023). Celebrate Houston's newest community printmaking studio.

🎨 ARTIST RECEPTION "Kristin Marie Bachmann | At the Still Point" 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the Techne Gallery at TXRX Labs (6501 Navigation Blvd., Houston 77011). This two-part exhibition features over 70 sculptural works developed over four years in Texas and New York.

🎨 OPENING RECEPTION “Transient Vistas” 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM in an East End warehouse (5601 Navigation Blvd., Houston 77011). On view thru September 29, 2024, FLATS presents work by Margaux Crump and Jake Eshelman, Stephanie Cuyubamba Kong, Lorena Molina, and Irene Antonia Diane Reece. 

🎨 OPENING RECEPTION “Do Ho Suh: In Process” 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University (6100 Main St., Houston 77005). On view thru December 21, 2024 are Do Ho Suh's iterative, collaborative work as well as his rubbings, sculptures, maquettes, and a participatory sculptural landscape.

🎨 OPENING RECEPTION “Texas Emerging | Volume V” 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Foltz Fine Art (2143 Westheimer Rd., Houston 77098). On view thru October 5, 2024, this year's iteration of this annual series features assemblages of Layla Bispo, quilted paintings of Chris Cascio, collage-based work of Louise Pennebaker, gestural abstractions of Benji Stiles, and geological paintings of Terry Suprean. 

🎨 OPENING RECEPTION “Adam and Eve and the iPhone” 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Archway Gallery (2305 Dunlavy St., Houston 77006). On view thru October 3, 2024 is John Slaby’s show of eclectic paintings addressing the effects of the ubiquitous smartphone.

🎨 OPENING RECEPTION “Side by Side – 20 x 20 Honduras Threads” 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Andrew Durham Gallery (1821 W. Alabama St., Houston 77098). On view thru September 21, 2024 are original drawings by Texas artists and the Honduran artisan interpretations on pillow covers.

🎨 OPENING RECEPTION “I Am, Because You Are” 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Sanman Studios (1109 Providence St., Houston 77002). On view thru November 3, 2024, Chayse Sampy’s debut exhibition features found, familial, and archival images that visualize moments of connection, leaving space for varied understandings and imaginings of an ever-unfolding 'now.'
