A Wish Come True Grants Bailey's Wish of a Lifetime

Bailey is a three-year-old with Unilateral Retinoblastoma in East Bridgewater. In Aug 2023, just a few weeks before his second birthday, Bailey was diagnosed with left eye retinoblastoma. His journey began when his mother noticed his left eye changing to a darker shade of blue. Trusting her instincts, she took Bailey to the doctor, where they were referred to Boston Children’s Hospital for further evaluation. It was there that Bailey’s family received the difficult news of his diagnosis. Due to the size of his tumor, Bailey underwent enucleation and now has a prosthetic eye. He’s adjusting well, thanks to his incredible spirit and the love of his family.

The foundation A Wish Come True will be able to grant Bailey's once-in-a-lifetime wish of visiting Give Kids the World and Disney.

Based in Coventry, Rhode Island, the mission of A Wish Come True is to grant children suffering from a life-threatening illness a magical wish. They are also the oldest wish-granting organization in RI and MA.

Support A Wish Come True's upcoming event, "Shamrocks and Shenanigans" at The Venus de Milo in Swansea, MA, from 6-10:30p on Mar 14, 2025. The festivities will feature dinner, dancing, a raffle, a live auction, and music from the Back in the Day Band. Beneficiaries of this event include Bailey and several other children. Tickets cost $45 for adults, $10 for children, and $450 for a table of ten people. Purchase your tickets on the A Wish Come True website.

Please visit the A Wish Come True website to learn more about the foundation and this event.

Historical Tidbit:

The Edison Power Plant on Spring St.

d5570c48-d7c5-46c1-98ef-73055774782f image

Constructed in 1907, the Edison Power Plant was the primary power source for the Brockton Edison Electric Illuminating Company until 1925. It brought electric lighting to East Bridgewater's Town Hall for the first time ever in 1908.

This facility took up forty-two acres of land on Spring St. and stood tall with two steam turbines.

In 1912, the East Bridgewater Fire Department installed and erected a fire whistle at the Edison Power Plant. The whistle was used to assemble the town's volunteer firefighters and blew each night at 7p.

East Bridgewater historian Margaret Alexander recalls, "We kids hated that whistle. It meant it was time to stop playing with our friends and come home each night."

The power plant was deconstructed around 1945.

"Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center (HRECC) Director Steve Hooke, East Bridgewater Police Chief Michael Jenkins, and East Bridgewater Fire Chief Timothy Harhen are pleased to announce that the HRECC has added the East Bridgewater Police and Fire Departments to its list of partner agencies.

The HRECC and the Town of East Bridgewater have entered into an Inter-Municipal Agreement for HRECC to answer 911 calls and provide dispatch services for East Bridgewater.

HRECC assumed dispatch responsibility for the East Bridgewater Police Department on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025. 'We believe that this agreement with HRECC will only strengthen our communications,' Chief Jenkins said. 'This partnership will provide us with more people to assist during emergencies and can only benefit the residents of East Bridgewater.'

HRECC previously assumed the East Bridgewater Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP, or 911) and dispatch responsibilities of the East Bridgewater Fire Department on Dec. 10, 2024. 'Joining the HRECC will help East Bridgewater optimize its emergency communication efforts,' Chief Harhen said. 'We are excited for this partnership with a respected regional leader in the field.'

HRECC now serves 13 communities across Norfolk, Plymouth, and Middlesex counties. HRECC also serves the Norfolk County Technical Rescue Team and the Fire District 4 Control Point."

Celebrating Black History Month

Dr. Maya Angelou once said, "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again." Of course, not all Black History was tragic. And, as we remember all aspects of Black History, we are reminded that Black History is Human History. Check out informative and interesting presentations from TheKingCenter.Org

Service Materials Inventory

The East Bridgewater Water Department is required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a service materials inventory of all water service lines per the Lead and Copper Rule. Service Lines are the pipes that connect the water mains in the street with the pipes in your home. This information will help in our efforts to identify the lead service lines reduce exposure to lead pipes and continue offering safe drinking water to the community. We look forward to your participation in this program.

Climate Can Do: Transform Food Waste into Healthy Soil

Composting is a great way to turn any food scraps into a soil supplement that is beneficial for your yards and gardens in the springtime and indoor plants you keep year-round. After you buy a compost bin (or build your own using materials like wood or cinder blocks), follow these steps to start creating your own compost:

  1. Build a 4-6 inch layer of carbon-rich material like dry leaves, twigs, shredded cardboard, or shredded paper/brown bags. (Make sure the cardboard is not waxy and covered with tape or glue!)
  2. Then layer in your nitrogen-rich material. This includes fruit & veggie scraps, coffee grounds, paper filters, crushed eggshells, and grass clippings.
  3. Continue layering these materials, making sure that there are about 2-3 times more carbon-rich materials in your compost. This will help air circulate!
  4. Occasionally mix the materials together and make sure they remain damp like a wet sponge. If your mixture is too wet, add more carbon-rich material.

It is natural for the compost to heat up when you mix it. When this no longer happens, or when all the visible food scraps have decomposed, let the compost sit for at least a month before using it. Overall, the process takes three to five months to make compost. If you do not mix the pile, it can take as long as a year for the process to finish! By reducing our food waste, we can all help reduce our carbon footprint!

Winter Humanity

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.”

~ Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass

“Winter is not a season, it's an occupation.”

~ Sinclair Lewis

“I know the look of an apple that is roasting and sizzling on the hearth on a winter's evening, and I know the comfort that comes of eating it hot, along with some sugar and a drench of cream... I know how the nuts taken in conjunction with winter apples, cider, and doughnuts, make old people's tales and old jokes sound fresh and crisp and enchanting.” ~ Mark Twain

Remembering winters of my childhood, I wait and hope for a good 6 inches to take out the sleds, snowshoes or cross country skis.

Glistening snowflakes, trees shimmering in their white dress...breathtaking. I bundle up against the cold and wet; and come inside for tea or hot chocolate. Then I offer up gratitude for my home, my clothes, and my food. Each day, each gift, appreciated.

It's not hard to see how this weather could cause intense suffering for many. Taking time to appreciate what I have and offering compassion to those that do not, this is humanity.

~ Jacquie
