Hello, Autumn! π
Well, the calendar says it's Fall so it must be Fall! π It's mind over matter, I say, even if the weather is still hot where you are. Proving we can handle the "ick", we're going to carry on with our badselves. (although I feel ya, enough already!)
I've been part of so many discussions around an "all or nothing'" mentality when it comes to our weight loss journeys. It can really slow us down and get us stuck in a fixed mindset. Have you found yourself thinking or acting in a way that if I can't do it "perfectly", why bother? It takes practice developing a growth mindset where we learn to live in the middle lane. π The research says one of the reasons for perfectionism is we fear being judged (among other things). Maybe we had a childhood where our parents demanded perfection? (I can relate, especially when it came to being seen in public--don't misbehave!) Rather than focus on why or where it comes from, let's focus on some coping strategies that get us unstuck, shall we?
This list comes from an article referenced here:

How to cope with perfectionism
- Embrace humility.
- Set realistic deadlines.
- Develop a capacity to laugh at yourself.
- Note your ability to survive mistakes.
- Weigh the costs of striving for perfection against the benefits. (Itβs incredibly freeing to accept yourself as someone who is sometimes messy and imperfect)
- Experiment with intentionally making things less than perfect.
Personally, I've been trying things at home to experiment with being less than perfect. (#6) For example, I spent a few weeks not getting my pedicure redone. (it did kind of feel horrific at the time) I allowed myself to wear sandals and let people see my polish chipped and worn down. It was actually freeing that not ONE person mentioned how bad my pedicure looked AND the sky didn't fall π
I've been working on #3 too-- that seems an easier one to focus on. We can't take ourselves too seriously. I'm learning to give myself grace and laugh about mistakes. Focusing on humor is so uplifting too! I feel so much better being imperfect than I ever felt when things felt perfect!
For #2, I'm being realistic for business and personal goals; living in the middle lane by not overcommitting myself. (It's working) ππ» It's so much easier to say "no" or "no thank you" as I get older.
If striving for perfection is getting in the way of progress, does the above list look helpful? Maybe you've tried all these things and are feeling good about your progress? We've survived all our worst days (#4). If you want to share a personal example of what strategy you're trying, email me at coachamy@personalcoachamy.com. Would love to hear from you!
Here's to embracing the mess & chaos and absolutely thriving in the middle lane!!
Yes, yes we can. π
