I’m more than a few months into my No Buy 2025 challenge, and what a revelation it’s been. My goal was simple — to buy no new clothes, shoes, cosmetics, perfumes, or bags this year, with a small exception for gifts. Birthdays and Mother’s Day came and went, and I accepted a few thoughtful items, but otherwise, I’ve stuck to my commitment.
And here’s what I discovered: my entire wardrobe, and the world around me!
It’s amazing what you find when you stop looking for something new. In those long-forgotten corners of my closet, I rediscovered pieces I loved but hadn’t worn in ages, items still with their tags, and the timeless classics that never go out of style. I’ve had fun pairing pieces in fresh ways, experimenting with combinations, and, most importantly, appreciating the quality and craftsmanship of what I already own.
Bags? I’ve started pulling them out and matching them to my outfits, letting contrasting colors add that perfect pop. And shoes? I’ve rediscovered the comfort of broken-in favorites and the height of summer wedges that I once stashed away. It’s like meeting old friends and remembering why you loved them in the first place.
And it wasn’t just clothes. I took stock of my books, finding about a dozen that I’d bought or been gifted but never cracked open — each still promising new lessons and exciting journeys. Now, they’re lined up for backyard and beach chair reading, waiting for their time in the sun.
The best part? Wearing an outfit that looks stunning and still gets a ton of compliments for its uniqueness — because it’s not something anyone can just walk over and buy off a rack this season. Truly refreshing, and zero regrets. Now a few of my close friends think I’m nuts (well, they’re right about that) and I’m likely not going to get invited to shop upstate at the Woodbury commons. Truth is, I’m perfectly fine with holding onto a wad of cash to enjoy on new “experiences” and not just material things. Less is definitely more, and more of all the right things, for me at least.
The caveat: don’t tempt fate. Skip the mall, even for window shopping. Trust me — it’s worth it.
