Welcome to the newest edition of the Cornerstones newsletter from BACnet International. The BACnet International community benefits from information and education shared through Cornerstones, the organization's monthly electronic publication. This publication is distributed to members of the BACnet International community, connecting corporate, integrator, site, student, and individual users to BACnet news and updates. Cornerstones is a unique publication because it speaks not only to the engineer and contractor communities, but also to facility professionals, building managers and owners, and other personnel.

BACnet manufacturers are invited to our annual PlugFest Interoperability Workshop, taking place Tuesday, September 29 – Thursday, October 1 at the University of New Hampshire’s Interoperability Laboratory. This three-day interoperability event brings together companies from around the world to test their BACnet products with devices from other vendors in a neutral, friendly environment. It’s an excellent opportunity to improve your BACnet testing methods and identify implementation errors before your product reaches the field.

Case studies are real‑world examples of systems that rely on BACnet to integrate devices and information in support of key building and enterprise goals, including energy management, carbon reduction, operational optimization, occupant comfort assurance, and other business objectives. These case studies typically include specific details on project objectives, system implementation, equipment and devices used, and achieved outcomes or lessons learned.

We are inviting members of the BACnet community to contribute new BACnet case studies to be featured in our online Case Study Library. By sharing your experiences, you help demonstrate the real‑world value of BACnet, highlight innovative applications, and provide practical insights for the broader community. A new comprehensive study released by researchers at the University of New Hampshire has, for the first time, quantified the massive environmental impact of Building Automation Systems (BAS) powered by the BACnet standard. The study reveals that since BACnet’s release in 1995, the adoption of smart building technologies in BACnet systems has avoided approximately 1,401 million tons (1.4 Gt) of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) globally.



This research provides a sophisticated multi-region, cohort-based assessment of long-term carbon mitigation from BACnet-based commercial building automation. By integrating BACnet adoption dynamics, building automation adoption dynamics, regional energy use patterns and grid carbon-intensity trajectories, the analysis provides a rigorous quantification of both historical and near-future mitigation impacts at a global scale.

Presented at the 2026 AHR Expo, this education session explores the journey of the BACnet Standard. BACnet was published as an ASHRAE Standard in 1995. More than 30 protocol revisions later, BACnet continues to transform the building automation industry as an open, secure, interoperable, and evolving protocol. Independent conformance testing allows the standard to be trusted and increasingly adopted by the industry worldwide. This session provides firsthand accounts from BACnet pioneers and experts who continue to shape today’s building automation landscape.



This session was moderated by BACnet International President Andy McMillan. Expert panelists included Steven Bushby, Coleman Brumley, James Lee, Sakhee Chandrayan, Nate Benes, Karl Heinz Belser, Fei Han, Dave Robin, Scott Ziegenfus, Hans Symanczik, Alexandra Henczka, Emily Hayes, and David Nardone.

BACnet Testing Laboratories require that products being tested for BTL Certification claim a Protocol Revision equal to or greater than a moving minimum. The minimum Protocol_Revision is determined each January 1 and is the highest Protocol_Revision that has been available in a BTL Test Plan for at least four years. The schedule below indicates the specifics of how this will work for the next few years.



Beginning in January 2027, the minimum Protocol Revision required for all current and future products seeking BTL Certification will be Protocol Revision 23. If your company currently has a BTL-listed product that was tested below Protocol Revision 23, your product will need to be retested to maintain its BTL Listing.

The specific requirements for retesting can be found in the BTL Testing Policies on the Test Documentation page of the BTL website. It is the manufacturer’s responsibility to determine whether any active BTL-listed product has changed in a way that requires retesting. If so, please notify the BTL Manager at btl-manager@bacnetinternational.org immediately. More information about expiring listings is available here.

BTL Certification provides users with confidence that a product has passed the industry-standard BACnet conformance tests conducted by a recognized, independent testing organization (RBTO). Many building owners and control system designers consider BTL Certification a must-have for project eligibility. BACnet products that have successfully completed compliance testing are eligible for BTL Certification and are authorized to use the BTL Mark. BTL Certified products are listed in the BTL Listing of Tested Products, which contains more than 1,560 products from over 230 manufacturers.

Lower Integration Cost

BTL Certified products accelerate and lower the cost of system integration. As a result, it is becoming increasingly common for specifications to require BTL Certification to be eligible to bid on a project.

Less Integration Risk

Relying on BTL Certified products lowers the risk of integration problems, project delays, and cost overruns. It also provides a solid foundation for future system enhancements and extensions.

Assurance of Independent Compliance Testing

BTL Certification provides users with assurance that a product has passed industry-standard BACnet conformance tests conducted by an RBTO.



Interoperability Assurance in a Multi-Vendor Environment

Tests are designed to validate that a product correctly implements a specified set of BACnet features, ensuring seamless integration in multi-vendor environments.

This session explores how BACnet-enabled integration of HVAC, lighting, and other building systems can qualify projects for utility rebate programs that recognize the energy and carbon emissions reductions fully integrated systems can achieve. It also examines the challenges inherent in designing such utility programs. The session consists of a panel discussion and audience Q&A with experts in utility rebate programs, BACnet, and networked lighting systems. Panel experts include Stuart Berjansky, Technical Director at the DesignLights Consortium (DLC); Luke Baar, Applications Engineer at LOYTEC Americas; and Michael Davidson, Research Engineer at Synapse Wireless.

This month's featured TBI resource is BACnet in Mission-Critical Applications, presented by Ken Gilbert at the 2026 AHR Expo. This session expands the traditional view of BACnet by showcasing its powerful role in mission-critical and non-traditional environments. Through real-world case studies, we’ll explore how BACnet is enabling smarter, more efficient operations in data centers, laboratories, and large-scale vertical farming systems.

The BACnet Institute (TBI) is an online portal for BACnet-focused learning and knowledge sharing. It provides an easy path to BACnet information and learning for everyone involved with BACnet systems. The portal includes three on-demand FREE courses and over 215 resources including white papers, articles, presentations, and a community forum. TBI Resources are free, but registration for an account is required. Courses are eligible for CEUs and PDHs.
