Message from Mayor Kapszukiewicz
The Rotary Club of Toledo deserves great thanks and recognition this week for its support of three transformational projects through advocacy and financial support, including universal prekindergarten education; lead poisoning identification, education, and abatement; and water advocacy.

Rotary President Dick Wolff announced Thursday that the group would dedicate $100,000 toward implementing universal prekindergarten education, and work to find more partners to fund and research the important effort. Everyone has to play a role because, as I have said many times, we can't do this alone. Rotary is a group of people who love and care about Toledo. They have decided to help Toledo because they believe in our community and know we are a strong, vibrant city. Writing a six-figure check to help us achieve universal pre-K is a substantial commitment!

Also this week, mayors from across the country met in Toledo to discuss gun violence prevention strategies. It was an incredibly valuable conference. American mayors are deeply frustrated at the level of gun violence across the nation, and we have decided that we need to push for a solution at local levels. There was some great symbolism in having this conversation in the middle of America, in a place like Ohio, because it indicates that the problems that mayors and police chiefs face are problems that we all face.

Brian Sarver and Whitney Austin, who both survived the mass shooting at Fifth Third headquarters in Cincinnati last September that killed four people, also attended the conference. Brian was shot once and lost his spleen. Whitney was shot 12 times — and yet somehow managed to survive. Their story is truly inspiring, yet it is also heartbreaking that this sort of thing keeps happening in our country.
