JUNE 2025

Dear Friends,

The hot days of summer are certainly here!

I don't like the cold at all, so I try not to complain when the mercury nears triple digits. But I have the luxury of an air-conditioned home, office and car. I have convenient access to seemingly endless sources of cold water to drink. And at the end of the day, I can freshen up with a cool shower before bed.

Individuals experiencing homelessness in our communities are not so fortunate. For them, high summer temperatures are at best uncomfortable and at worst life-threatening. They face similar risks during the frigid days of winter.

While it's important to acknowledge and, in fact, speak out about the challenges faced by the unhoused, that's not enough. We are called to do more. I recently came across a quote on this topic that resonated with me:

“Love and justice demand action. They demand making love felt and working to alleviate the material impoverishments that threaten human dignity.”1

In other words, it’s not enough to tell a good story or to wax poetic about caring for the poor. Rather, love ... demands ... action. Addressing the threat that homelessness poses to another's well-being and dignity requires that we roll up our sleeves and get down to the doing.

With the January 2026 launch of our Horizons transitional housing program fast approaching, please read on to learn more about the “doing” being done by LHM Foundation’s staff, volunteers and supporters!

With gratitude,

Amy

A warm welcome and a place to play! We’re working hard to make sure the future home of our Horizons transitional housing program is ready for its January 2026 opening.

Check out the before and after photos of the newly refreshed lobby! Our goal is to create a bright, welcoming atmosphere for Horizons program participants. Our volunteers will have a comfortable spot at the reception desk to greet all who enter. And check out the mailboxes! We love the fact that each program participant will have their own locked mailbox.

Our Horizons program will serve both individuals and families, so we wanted to ensure we created an area just for children while making safety a priority.

With those goals in mind, we were able to convert a room off of our second floor community space into a "kids zone"!

As the photo shows, we had a door installed to muffle the noise out of of respect for other program participants, with windows into the room allowing parents to keep a close eye on their children.

All renovations should be done by the end of July!

DID YOU KNOW?

DAUPHIN COUNTY DEMOGRAPHICS

Although the crisis of homelessness touches people across demographic lines, it has a disproportionate impact on certain groups and populations. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development reports that in Dauphin County, PA (home to the Horizons transitional housing program):

  • Unaccompanied youth (ages 18–24) saw a 52% increase in homelessness from 2023 to 2024.
  • Older adults (ages 55 and up) make up 20% of those experiencing homelessness, with nearly half of those individuals sleeping in places not meant for human habitation.
  • Families with children saw a 39.4% rise in homelessness, after a 16% rise in 2023.
  • Of those experiencing homelessness, 53% identified as Black, 16% as Hispanic/Latino, and 7% as mixed race.

We need to ensure that efforts available to support the unhoused are as diverse as the populations they serve. The Horizons transitional housing program is designed to meet people where they are – across ages, life stages, and lived experiences.

POWERED BY PARTNERS

KARNS FOODS

A big THANK YOU to Karns Foods for supporting LHM Foundation’s transitional housing program at the annual Karns Foods Charity Golf Outing on June 4, and to Ruth (Karns) and Bruce Rudderow for personally matching amounts raised at skills contests throughout the day! We are grateful for the generosity of all who participated and for the opportunity to network with so many businesses in the food industry.

It was a beautiful day on the links at Range End Golf Club!

Beam Teams in action! Earlier this month, our Beam Team volunteers worked with the York County Food Bank in Red Lion, PA, to help distribute food to approximately 700 families. Although it had been raining for weeks, it seems, we had the good fortune of a dry day! Our volunteers enjoyed a fun afternoon with one another, bringing joy to the families they served. Client favorites included red grapes, cucumbers, yogurt and bread, although many were excited about the spinach and cabbage as well!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

WENDY GALLAGHER

Meet Wendy! A valued member of the Compliance & Clinical Services Team at LHM Physical Therapy Institute, Wendy still finds time to volunteer regularly with LHM Foundation.

Fully embracing LHM Foundation’s commitment to service, Wendy shared, “I have been fortunate in all aspects of my life and feel that giving back to those who have not been as fortunate is the least I can do.”

Wendy has joined several Beam Team activities, from food banks to after school programs and more!

Describing her experiences, Wendy said, “It might be packing food for those who are hungry or playing games and doing homework with kids, but it feels good to see that I am helping others in need. There is a volunteer activity that will interest everyone. You are guaranteed to have a great experience!”

Thank you, Wendy! You truly are a bright light at LHM Foundation!
