Tazzarin North to Nunatsiavut

Arrived at St. Anthony

2100, Tuesday, July 11, 2023

Today is a significant day for my voyage. With the help of my good friend and fellow sailor, Mory Creighton, the first big leg of this summer's voyage is complete. We departed St. John's close to two weeks ago. Today, in thick fog, we rounded Fishing Point at the entrance of St. Anthony and headed into the harbor. We have traversed the full east coast of Newfoundland and have had numerous adventures, some of which I have shared with you. The photo above if of rhe small lighthouse at Fishing Point; we heard the lighthouses foghorn warning us off the cliffs and rock's as we entered. The next photo below shows some of the shoreline as one enters St. Anthony.

We hauled our anchor in Maiden Arm at about 0800 this morning. We did note that the landscape is changing now that we have made it this far north. The second photo below shows thebshore of Maiden Arm with exposed rock, moss and lichens. of particular note, the trees are becoming stunted and sparser, a foreshadowing of the weeks ahead.

Coming across Har Bay to St. John's we were in thick fog, dodging icebergs here and there. One bright moment the sun tried to push through and created a fogbow off our stern, similar to a rainbow, as shown in the photo below.

I will be here in St. Anthony at Newfoundland's northern tip for a few days, reprovisioning and preparing for the next leg of the summer voyage. In a few days, Tazzarin will again sail and we will cross the Strait of Belle Isle to the coast of Southern Labrador. Both people and villages will become far sparse, like the trees. I hope you will join us!

One final note...at the bottom of this email I have included the photo from yesterday of a furry, four footed creature. one of our email readers caught our misidentification. It was not a moose, rather it was a woodland caribou.
