Pickleball, Birthday Cake & “Just One More Game!”
On October 10, the South Jersey Ski Club traded ski poles for pickleball paddles as 16 members gathered at James Atkinson Memorial Park in Sewell for a fun-filled Pickleball Party.
Mother Nature cooperated with a gorgeous fall day, and the courts were buzzing with friendly competition, laughter, and plenty of learning!
In true SJSC fashion, seasoned players stepped up to teach and coach those new to the game. Before long, everyone was serving, rallying, and having a ball! A big thank-you to our fantastic instructors, Lou and Heidi Manera, Julia Edelman, Tom Johnson, and Geri Benedetto, for sharing their skills and helping make the day such a success.
After a couple of hours of energetic play, it was time to trade paddles for cake and cocktails as we celebrated Jim Moffitt’s birthday. Of course, the fun didn’t end there. Even after the official party wrapped up, some members couldn’t resist squeezing in “just one more game”!
Whether on the slopes or the pickleball court, SJSC members know how to keep the fun going. A beautiful fall day, great friends, and a little friendly competition made this another memorable club outing!

October Is for Skiers: Get Ready for the Season!
The temperatures may still be mild and the leaves are putting on their annual show, but for skiers, October is the perfect time to prep for the slopes! Before you know it, we'll be trading fall foliage for fresh powder and crisp mountain air.
Get Your Body Ready
Skiing requires strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. Squats, lunges, step-ups, and core exercises strengthen the muscles you'll rely on all day. Add walking, cycling, or stair climbing to build stamina, and incorporate stretching for flexibility. Even a few weeks of consistent prep can make a huge difference in how you feel during that last run of the day!
Give Your Gear a Checkup
Pull out your equipment now so you aren't surprised by an uncomfortable boot or broken zipper on trip day. Inspect your skis for damaged edges and bases, and visit a pro shop for a tune-up, wax, and binding check. Inspect your helmet, goggles, and gloves, replacing any damaged safety gear. October is also the best time to restock winter clothing, moisture-wicking base layers, and essentials like hand warmers and sunscreen before the winter rush.
Make Your Plans & Get Excited!
Review your ski club trips, make sure you're all paid up and pay attention to your email for any important updates from your trip leaders.
Early planning ensures fewer last-minute surprises so you can focus on the best part of the sport: the people! Winter is coming—and the South Jersey Ski Club is ready to make it another great season!

Remembering Ernie Kraus
It is with sadness that we share the passing of longtime South Jersey Ski Club member Ernie Kraus, who was part of SJSC for more than five decades.
Ernie hung up his skis at age 84, but that didn’t slow him down! He continued to attend club events and even joined an EPSC trip to Europe last year. At 91, Ernie holds the distinction of being our oldest recorded club member.
While many will remember Ernie as an accomplished skier in his younger years, others will fondly recall his passion for travel and his expertise in trip insurance, which made him a trusted resource for fellow members. He also generously shared his knowledge and experience through his service in several SJSC Board positions over the years.
Ernie was a wonderful friend and a cherished member of our ski club family. His adventurous spirit, friendship, and enthusiasm for life will be remembered by many. He will be greatly missed.

In Memoriam
Mary Deaux | 1958–2026
We are saddened to say goodbye too soon to Mary Deaux. Mary cherished the opportunity to ski with her daughters on South Jersey Ski Club trips and enjoyed the many social adventures the club had to offer, from camping outings to fun-filled days at the shore in Wildwood.
Mary’s caring nature and bright smile brought warmth to those around her. She will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by her SJSC friends.
