Rock 'N' Roll Billboards at VBMA | |
Be transported to Los Angeles’ celebrated Sunset Strip of the late 1960s and 70s and immerse yourself in rock and roll nostalgia when the Vero Beach Museum of Art opens its summer exhibition Rock ‘N’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip: Photographs by Robert Landau, on view in the Holmes Gallery from May 18 to September 1, 2024.
In those years, the Sunset Strip was the heart and soul of a vibrant music scene—home to record companies, record stores, and legendary nightclubs. Through the lens of his camera, photographer Robert Landau chronicled the ephemeral pop-culture masterpieces—classic rock and roll billboards—that loomed over L.A.’s most iconic boulevard for only weeks before being dismantled, white-washed, and painted over with newer images.
Often adapted from edgy album cover art, the hand-painted wooden panels depicted imagery that eschewed traditional commercial considerations and instead reflected the period’s latest trends in music, graphic art, and even fine art, transforming the Strip into a veritable drive-thru art gallery. Everyone in the world of classic rock from the Beatles and Bowie to Led Zeppelin and Zappa was represented, beginning with the Doors’ breakthrough promotion for their debut record in 1967 right up until the advent of MTV in the early 80s.
| |
The exhibition comprises 50 photographs; four of which are presented on a monumental scale. These include 40 images that Landau took—some captured as a teenager when he was living with his father in an apartment above the Tower Records store on the Strip—and ten historical photographs that complement Landau’s to reveal the progression of signage into billboard art, highlighting the intersection of art and advertising.
Among the musical artists represented in the billboards themselves are: The Beatles; Bruce Springsteen; Crosby, Stills, and Nash; David Bowie; David Lee Roth; Donna Summer; The Eagles; Electric Light Orchestra; Elvis Costello; The Eurythmics; Faces; Humble Pie; Jackson Browne; Joe Cocker; John Lennon; Madonna; Marvin Gaye; Nazareth; Neil Young; Pink Floyd; Procol Harum; Queen; Randy Newman; Rhinoceros; Rick Wakeman; Rod Stewart; The Rolling Stones; Santana; Ted Nugent; URO; and The Who.
With the release of his book Rock ‘N’ Roll Billboards of the Sunset Strip (Angel City Press, 2012), Robert Landau in conjunction with Photographic Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, California, organized a touring exhibition consisting of photographs of the key imagery from the book and pertinent text panels. The exhibition brings to life this unique and rarely seen period in the history of rock and roll while shedding new light on the fabled Sunset Strip.

Don’t Miss this Special Guided Tour of
Art of the Fantastic: Imaginative Illustration from the Korshak Collection
by Science Fiction and Fantasy Art Collector Stephen Korshak at the Backus Museum
The A.E. Backus Museum is pleased to announce it will host a special gallery program for the exhibition Art of the Fantastic: Imaginative Illustration from the Korshak Collection on Saturday, April 20 from 1:30 - 3:30 pm. Collector Stephen Korshak will share his deep knowledge and stories behind the art and artists on display in this guided public tour of the exhibition. The program is included with regular Museum admission of $5 per person (current members are always free; and for this special program, those who wish to attend in science fiction / fantasy costume will be admitted free). The exhibition is currently on view at the Backus Museum located at 500 North Indian River Drive in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce, Florida.
Stephen Korshak, founder and owner with his wife Alma of the Korshak Collection, grew up and was inspired by great art in his home. His father, Erle Korshak, was the publisher of the pioneering science fiction book company Shasta Publishers. Shasta ushered in the transition of important science fiction literature from magazines printed on cheap pulp paper to hardcover, library-quality books. Much of that art lived with Korshak at his home and at his father’s company office in Chicago. This significant private collection has grown over the years, touring museums throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. Stephen is an associate member of the First Fandom club, and received the Sam Moskowitz Archive Award for excellence in science fiction collecting in 2016.
All dates and programming subject to change; please check the website for any updates or cancellations. We appreciate your understanding, your patience, and your support.

Free admission to this special gallery program on April 20 will be provided to those who attend in cosplay as their favorite sci-fi or fantasy character. Cosplay is a portmanteau of "costume play". It is part activity and part performance art in which participants wear costumes that represent specific characters. Works on display from the Korshak Collection offer recognizable characters including: Gandalf the Grey, Elric of Melnibone, John Carter of Barsoom, Tarzan of the Apes, Don Quixote, Sir Gawain, Alice (Adventures in Wonderland), Edgar Allan Poe characters, and assorted aliens, witches, fae folk, and mermaids. Guests, however, are welcome to come as their favorite imaginative character, even if not depicted in the exhibition. A professional event photographer will be documenting the gallery program, who will also share photos with attending cosplayers for their use. For more details and cosplay guidelines, see the Facebook Event page: https://fb.me/e/6dDh5hmxq
Art of the Fantastic: Imaginative Illustration from the Korshak Collection is on view now through April 28, 2024. The Korshak Collection features works by pioneering artists from over a century of published science fiction, horror, and fantasy. These original adventure and fantasy illustrations appeared on the covers and pages of timeless novels, and in classic pulp magazines from the 1930s through 1960s such as Amazing Stories, Weird Tales, Fantastic Adventures, and Wonder Stories. The exhibition features 40 works from this notable private collection by such masters as Aubrey Beardsley, Arthur Rackham, Gustave Doré, Howard Pyle, Virgil Finlay, Kelly Freas, J. Allen St. John, Frank Frazetta, and Michael Whelan. With outstanding images of Martian princesses, Arthurian legends, ethereal fairies, alien invaders, imaginative pasts and fanciful, uncertain futures, Art of the Fantastic is far and away a superb survey of the extraordinary.

FOR COSPLAYERS:
We can't wait to see your stuff! Regular con rules apply: (1) no hate, (2) no real weapons, and for art museums (3) no big props that might poke, damage, or be a danger to art on walls, stuff on pedestals, etc. Make good choices, be aware of your surroundings and of those who are enjoying the afternoon with you (whether in costume or not).
Your cosplay is NOT limited to what's on display, but if there were bonus points, you'd get them if you had a connection to characters and associations with: Gandalf the Grey, Elric of Melnibone, John Carter of Barsoom, Tarzan of the Apes, Don Quixote, Sir Gawain, Alice (Adventures in Wonderland), Edgar Allan Poe characters, and assorted aliens, witches, fae folk, and mermaids.
And we'll have a professional event photographer present -- she'll share photos of you in costume afterwards so you can remember your visit.
NOTE: Please allow extra time and patience for parking — it will be a busy day in Historic Downtown Fort Pierce with other activities

Reed Dixon at Gallery 14
Reed currently lives and works as a fine artist in Boynton Beach, FL. A native of Pittsburgh, PA, he studied graphic design and fine arts at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. In 1964 Reed was hired by Hallmark Cards in Kansas City, MO as an illustrator. He later moved back east to work in the advertising/design business. After spending years in the ad business (and always painting) Reed opened Dixon Graphics, a graphic design and fine arts studio in 1977. Throughout the years Reed's art has been chosen for exhibit in many locales, including the Society of Illustrators Show in New York City, Communication Arts Illustration Annual and numerous Philadelphia graphic/design annuals.
His art has been exhibited widely over the last 50 years and now can be found in several corporate and private collections. Reed is well known for his non-traditional style, color palette and unusual variety of subject matter.
"What I do...I call it imagery. By that I mean the end result is not necessarily a study of the subject, but, how I feel the image should look in the end. I've always had the need to experiment with paints, mixed media applications, colors, textures and subject matter. I'm never short on inspiration to capture what fascinates me."
