Construction makes moderate gains in August Labour Force Survey

Canada’s employment figures were little changed in August, reports Statistics Canada in the most recent Labour Force Survey. While the number of workers increased by 22,000, or 0.1 per cent, the employment rate decreased 0.1 percentage points to 60.8 per cent, and the unemployment rate rose 0.2 percentage points to 6.6 per cent.

The construction sector contributed to the job gains, adding 3,300 workers in August to come in at 1,566,700 workers for the month. That was a gain of 0.2 per cent from July, but 0.2 per cent behind August of 2023.

Canadian construction spared in TFW crackdown

Canada’s construction sector was spared as the federal Liberal government announced cuts to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP) low-wage stream but stakeholders say they are wary about what might come next and are renewing calls for meaningful broader reforms. The reductions to the TFWP low-wage stream announced by Minister of Employment Randy Boissonnault Aug. 26 specifically exempted the construction sector as well as health care and food production but Sean Strickland, executive director of Canada’s Building Trades Unions (CBTU), charged that the program is nonetheless a wage suppressor for Canada’s trades workers.

Kitchener building greenest rec facility in Canada

Shovels are in the ground for a massive new, $144-million, multi-purpose indoor recreation facility at RBJ Schlegel Park on Huron Road in Kitchener, Ont. that will be the city’s first net-zero carbon building.

The 189,600-square-foot structure, designed by Unity Studio Design, will feature advanced geothermal heating and cooling systems and an array of rooftop solar panels, enabling the complex to reduce carbon emissions by 22 tonnes annually and save the city about $100,000 in utility costs each year.

Job vacancies in construction and manufacturing nearly 50,000 more than previous four years

Between October 2020 and May 2024, Canada’s construction, manufacturing, and utilities sectors faced significant labor shortages, averaging over 129,000 vacancies per year—nearly 50,000 more than pre-pandemic levels. This shortage, particularly in skilled trades, was driven by increased labor demand as global economies reopened and major projects ramped up nationwide. Demand for workers in these sectors, which peaked during the pandemic recovery period, was exacerbated by low interest rates and high housing demand.
