ON CAMPUS SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS WITH EXPERIENCE IN FOSTER CARE, HOMELESSNESS, OR REFUGEE STATUS

WE ARE CHANGEMAKERS

Nice to meet you! We are a group of students attending GVSU, GRCC, and Aquinas college who have experience in foster care, homelessness and/or refugee status. Our job is to find other students on campus with similar experiences and connect with them to provide: 

• Resources(for example: info on scholarships or funding for college/books/supplies)
• Support (for example: help finding a food pantry or housing)
• Connections (for example: professionals on campus or in community who "get" our unique needs and want to help us succeed in college)

GET SUPPORT

We get it. It's hard to stay in school and get good grades when you are trying to work to pay your rent and for food. It's tough to worry about how you are going to pay for your books and supplies every semester. You are doing this pretty much on your own right? So are we. Maybe you are used to doing stuff on your own. We get that too. We don't want to give you one more thing for your "to do" list. We simply want to connect with you, check in periodically, and provide support you need to succeed in school. 

FIND COMMUNITY

You are not alone in your experiences, even though it may seem that way. It's college right? There's probably not a lot of convo happening around foster care, housing insecurity, or refugee experience. There are students on campus (like us) that have similar experiences and professionals on campus who understand our unique needs related to our past experiences. We are here to support you and connect you to the resources you need to make your life easier. 

EARN STIPENDS

You can engage and participate in our program on your own terms. Minimally, you will be asked to provide a cell phone number and email for weekly check ins. There will be other opportunities during the month where you can connect virtually to our group and earn gift cards for participating. These are not boring online lectures, but an opportunity to connect with other students, have fun, and learn about resources that will make your life easier. You are not required to participate in any way, we just want to be here if you need us!
